    Good morning,

Turned on the car early this morning at the dealer and....No Coded! Having them check it out anyways and might as well do an oil change and tire rotation.

Thank so much for the information because it'll serve me well the next time and not feel so dang useless!

Thanks again and have a great day.

Dealership blamed it on the Pedal commander.

I have a 2017 TRD Off-Road. 30K miles. I was going up a canyon when my CEL went off and TRAC OFF light. Then suddenly truck went limp and brake override malfunction came on and it was like the engine started sputtering. Pulled over, turned car off, turned back on and same thing. Same lights came on with the same warning. But this time the engine was REALLY struggling. I turned it off again. Waited 4-5 minutes. Turned back on and CEL and TRAC OFF lights were still on but no Brake Override Malfunction this time. Engine ran smoothly so I continued to drive.

I know I didn't hit the brake and the gas pedal at the same time. No mods done on the truck. No pedal commander. What would have caused this?

I have had so many problems with this Tacoma I am feeling pretty frustrated at this point. What should I tell the dealer? I have had a leaky rear diff, a faulty entune radio, stumbling issues, and sensor issues. For a truck worth $40K I am not impressed by how often I have had to go to the dealership for these issues.

Did I get a lemon or is this just what everyone is putting up with as well?

This just happened to my truck, no reasonable reason why. I'll see if it fixes itself, we just got a bunch of weather in and that might of tripped a sensor?

Update to my first report. Since using pedal commander my truck has had no issue. I wont take it off now since I keep hearing about defects when not used.
I had no rain but was about 98 degrees that night here in Vegas.
Drove home from work, parked and was disabled at 730 am when went to work.

    Hardcore off road floor mats!
    2016 Tacoma SR manual

Brake override issue occurred after about 32000 miles & nearly 3 years of owning the truck. First time shop said my brake master cylinder sas leaking. Fixed for free under warrenty. Issue occured again month later. Took it back to the shop. Held it for a week. Computer said i had the brake & gas on at the same time, I called BS but went along with it. I drive semis, I know what my feet are doing, but anyway...

About a month later (29 Dec) it happened again after vehicle sat from 8pm till 1pm. Turned the vehicle on, idled for 15 seconds and went to go. Immediate brake override. Did 3 stop & goes in 2 blocks. Override each time. Turned truck off/on and override came on again. Finally went off and went straight to the dealership. Scheduled an appointment for next week Saturday to have a ride along. Issue is, it doesn't happen on command. Was told if they can't see it happen they can't do anything about it.

No issues till around 7pm on the 29th after vehicle set for 2 hours. Recorded a 30 second video of issue, again started as soon as the vehicle took off. Couldn't see shit because of poor lighting. Drove 5mph for 1.3 miles home. Took a few lights & tapped them inside pointing towards my pedals. Tried to recreate the issue but nothing. Parked the truck at the same location the issue occurred earlier in the day. Let sit for 1.5 hours & took off Brake override! Recorded what my feet were doing & it CLEARLY shows I am NOT TOUCHING THE BRAKE. I did multiple stop & goes and turned the vehicle off and on all recorded. Issue came back on each time. Again drove 1.3 miles home at 5mph. Will have the truck towed to the dealership monday.

Dealership told me even if I slightly tap the brake while the gas is on it'll go into override, this is not true. I wanted to see how sensitive the override was. Drove to a empty stretch of road and proceeded to test the overrride. Tapping the brake while the gas is on or even slamming the brake doesn't trigger the override. You have to be dragging the brakes for about 3 seconds till override comes on.

Man, so glad you said this. Drove home last night, no issues. Parked it, went to bed, came out this afternoon and started it up and got the Brake Override malfunction error.

Couldn't think of what it could be so I searched on here, saw your post, removed my Pedal Commander and that fixed the issue.

Isn’t the purpose of the brake override to cut engine power when brake and throttle are applied at the same time? If you tap both pedals at the same time, I’m pretty sure it’s not supposed to permanently kill you truck. Haha. Wtf Toyota.

Also, I read somewhere (whether you have the pedal commander or not) that if you get this message to turn the car off for 5 minutes, then try starting your car 6 to 10 times and itll clear the error. FYI...I may be getting up there in age, but I can sure as hell say that I've never tapped both the brake and accelerator at the same time

I have this error but my truck will not start at all. I have the pedal commander too. My accessory lights come on. But the truck won’t start

Try disconnecting the battery, then disconnect pedal commander...reconnect battery and see if that does it. (sorry, not a mechanic, but it's the first thing that comes to mind.) Good luck

This is the exact same thing that just happened to me. i noticed a reduce engine power light the other day. restarted the car it went away. then i was about to take a corner with a risky gap and when i put my foot on the gas the break over ride malfunction came on!! almost had a massive accident. the car was bunny hopping slowly untill i could pull off the main road.. all the same lights came on as yours. i restarted again. engine ran poorly. but no brake malfunction. i gor my cheese burger from mcdonalds and went home what the heck ??? why is this happening do we know any more yet? (mines auto so i 100% would not have depressed both break and gas together)

This just happened to my 2016 with 160000 kilometres (100000 miles) on it. Every time I hit the brakes, the warning alert “Accelerator and Brake Depressed Simultaneously” came on.

Every time it did, I lost power as mentioned in various threads pertaining to this matter. I even received the “Brake Override Malfunction” Malfunction” alert.

The first time this matter surfaced, I was able to regain power to the wheels and the problem eventually went away. I took the truck to the dealer and it was thought to be associated with the brake assist. They stated perhaps I had pressed the brake pedal too hard and activated the assist feature and told me to return if the problem reoccured. I wasn’t so sure of the diagnoses but left since the problem went away.

The next night it resurfaced. I received both warnings again and made plans to see the dealer in the morning. When I got home I turned the ignition off. They say if you turn the ignition off and on six times, this resets the computer. I don’t know if this is true or not but when I attempted to do this the first time, the truck started without depressing the brake pedal. With the push button start, I thought this was weird and thought perhaps maybe the problem was associated with the “Brake Assist Lamp” switch. This made sense why I had received the first warning. If the switch was stuck, the computer would think the brakes were applied even though they weren’t.

I communicated this to the dealer and they investigated it. They confirmed this was the culprit and since have replaced the switch. Hopefully this is the fix. It cost me an arm and half a leg to do this. I’m crossing my fingers. If the problem resurfaces again, I’ll post a reply.

    Back to the drawing board!!

The problem resurfaced a couple of hours after checking out from the dealership. I’m going to visit them first thing in the morning.

    Something needs to be done.
