I've posted this before but when I took my wife's '18 in for the fuel pump recall, the dealer called to say they "recommended" new front pads. As the truck only has 30K miles, I was skeptical so told him "no thanks". After I hung-up with him, I started looking around and found a Powerstop OEM equivalent set of pads and rotors for $89 so I ordered a set. Then when I went to pick up the truck, their paperwork showed the pad thickness at 5MM...... I should have known better as this dealership is notorious. At least I have the parts for next year when the front brakes might actually need to be done...:p

A vernier caliper is NOT the best way to measure discs; any sort of lip or ridge, as well as abrasions on the surface can cause a false reading. A micrometer is the best tool to use.

I can tell you why that is .... Back in the day.. 70's and into the 80's ... Hubs/rotors used to be one solid/cast unit.
So when you 'turned' brake rotors, they were absolutely 'true' to the hub. Not so much now.
Rotors are separate pieces now, and what may be 'true' on the machine turning yer rotors, may not be 'true' when sandwiched between the hub and bolting the rim back on. Even being a few thousand's off can give you brake probs. Chatter/pulling/whatever.
So being that you can now buy new rotors (MIC) for damn-near the same cost as having them turned ... It's worth it to have an auto parts place to just have you buy 'new' (Your prob) ... VS. coming back at them saying 'You screwed my rotors up!' thing.
