I've had to replace front pads at 30,000 miles, and I've gotten 83,000 miles out of one set. But around 50,000 is the norm. But it depends on how aggressively you use the brakes and the type of driving you do. Most of the 83,000 miles I got on one set was highway miles. Brakes last a long time when you can drive 300 miles at a time and never touch them.

If you let the pads wear completely out they will cut deep grooves in the rotors and you may not be able to save them. Replace the pads before they wear completely out and you may not have to touch the rotors at all. Or maybe just turn a small amount off to true them up. I still have the factory rotors on my Tacoma after 226,000 miles. They have been turned twice and cannot be turned again. I'll have to replace them next time I need brakes. Probably at around 250,000 miles.

Just had an F350 come in the shop today like that, left front pads were gone and the pistons were popped out of the caliper.

If you can't change them until December stop driving it.

I hope you don't live in Minnesota?

When you bring the rotors to get machined, they measure & let you know if it can be done or not. If you heard grinding, stopped and got towed home, maybe they can be saved. Any use beyond that they're most likely gkne.

Make an appt. and get the brakes done. Stop farting around. You're sounding really dumb following your line of thinking. Get a ride to work that day, OR maybe spend a week or more in the trauma unit of the local hospital, that is if you survive the accident.

How about if you survive and kill or maim someone else ?

Believe me, they won't miss you at the check out register...

I get it, a Friday joke. Or is it possible for someone to actually believe being able to stop isn't important.

I'm not trying to be insulting and understand not everyone knows the importance of vehicle maintenance. Not everyone understands how to fix their vehicle themselves. Not being able to start it or accelerate is one thing. Not being able to stop is entirely different. I know some people just put gas in and drive until it doesn't drive anymore because they haven't been taught or don't know any better. You're a step smarter than them. You asked why do I have this noise, can I wait 5 months. Now do the smart thing, tow it to a shop, get it fixed no matter what it cost you in money or time. Yes being able to stop is that important.

If money is the issue, you need to eat ramen rice and beans for a couple months. Turn off any luxuries like cable tv, wifi, water, electricity. Yes being able to stop is that important.

A scenario, op steps on the brake pedal, fails to stop like any vehicle would with properly operational brakes, plows through a crosswalk full of kids injuring several, killing a few. Investigating detective searches social media, finds he's been repeatedly advised not to drive with faulty brakes for 5 months, upgrades the charge from involuntary manslaughter to first degree murder. YES BEING ABLE TO STOP IS THAT IMPORTANT.

Only 30K miles on a set of pads. Jeez what type pads, were they made plastic. I have never replaced a set of front brake pads under 90K miles, most were over 100K.

In case it is not clear to the OP ... metal to metal is bad - heat is generated at an exponential rate. Enough to boil the brake fluid which generates air bubbles in the brake lines and you suddenly have no brakes. There will be no advance notice until you step on the brakes and you continue to move forward.

How I know the rotors are warped and what causes the rotors to get warped...

    All stock, baby!
You'll feel a wobble/vibration from the front end when you apply the brakes. If you've ever overheated your brakes down a loooong steep hill and started feeling a vibration, that's due to the rotors warping. If not excessive it tends to go back to normal after the rotors have cooled off, but sometimes stress in the rotor due to things like over-tightened lug nuts causes the warpage to become permanent. You can't see the warpage, you'd need to check runout with a dial caliper or something like that to be able to measure it.

But the noise you described is probably easily diagnosed through visual inspection. Have you pulled those wheels off yet to take a look? Like I said previously, get some pics and post 'em if you're unsure what you're seeing.

    1. When you step on the brakes with good rotors and pads all you feel is slowing. Do you remember what that felt like? Did you hear anything?

    2. When you step on the brakes with warped rotors you may feel a shudder in the steering wheel, a shudder and pulsing in brake pedal, the front of the truck shaking or all of the above...

    3. Grinding sound is likely the pad backing plate against the rotor...

    Condition 1. is good.

    Conditions 2. & 3., not good...
