My tundra sat in the salt belt outside 24/4 for nearly 20 years and didn't look that bad. I use to pull the brake pads once a year and use a small amount of high temp brake caliper grease on thos pins so they wouldn't rust in place. Seen too many guys trying to hammer them out.

Your rotors are trashed any way pry with whatever you have crowbar whatever. When you push the piston in it is going to return fluid to the master cylinder (good indicator of brake pad wear is lower fluid level) because all that stuff is trashed. It is a sealed system there is nothing wrong with the fluid in the caliper if you add fluid it is going to be all over everything when you force extra fluid back in it will be overfilled, brake fluid will damage paint. Another hint compleat both sides then pump your brakes a couple of times before you go for a ride.

My rotors were in fantastic condition and I left them on.

Based on OP’s others post- has larger tires and tows a camper,, that’ll help give some a reference on mileage and accelerated wear.

With the old cars I used to just compress the caliper and force the fluid back to the master cylinder - mindful not to overflow it.

Modern cars with ABS have a lot more components in the brake system so I'm not comfortable using that method any more.

Now I use a hose on the bleeder when compressing the caliper, the fluid goes into a bottle and is disposed of properly.

At least OP didn't blow out a wheel cylinder and lose half his brake fluid on the trail at 21k :anonymous:

Mine made it to 80k before changing them a couple weekends ago. The pins were dry but not seized. Results may vary.

I found that out the worst way possible a couple weekends ago changing the brakes for the first time on this thing. I popped the reservoir cap off, got a c-clamp and pressed the first side pistons on the drivers side caliper... and the opposite piston shot out onto the ground. Truck is now peeing brake fluid everywhere. Stuffed it back in but of course the seal was ruined. Next time I'll open up the screw.

Next time try one of these, does all the pistons at once.

For me, metal on metal gets new rotors, they are fairly cheap.

edit: Even if not metal on metal, if the rotors look bad enough even though they are above min. thickness, I'll replace them.

I beg to differ. I'm over 80k on the original pads and they're still OK. My 2nd gen went over 100k on the originals. Then again, if I don't need to be braking, my foot isn't on the pedal.

I feel the Tacoma downshifting on it’s own while going down a steep hill

I have a camper as well. Guess this could’ve contributed. Also my truck sits all week. I only use it on the weekends

I didn’t expect them to look like that at 55k miles. ‍♂️

I had all 4 tires replaced last year from Tire Tech. They never mentioned anything
