Brake problems when offroad, insight?

    Hey all, so during the last meetup at superstition, I noticed slowly my brakes started to get worse and worse as the weekend went on, and let me try to explain what I felt/ dealt with as I haven't had this issue before (still trying to learn as I go).

    So when offroad speaking, I would press the brake pedal there would be a kind if grinding and almost like a force pushing back on the pedal so I couldnt push it in. I would only be able to actually slow down or stop by pumping the brakes very fast and short bursts. It was actually quite confusing and somewhat terrifying.

    Not sure if it was abs or what not, as like I said I'm slowly (but surely) learning how my truck operates and how to fix problems.
    Thanks in advance to anyone who might help me alleviate the problem.

    ABS traction control.

    Those of us who drive in winter are VERY familiar with this safety feature.

    Do NOT pump your brakes if your vehicle is equipped with ABS. The ABS system is already doing it for you. By pumping you are defeating the system.

    Definitely ABS. If you are having this experience, you need to look into the ABS kill switch mod. The ABS on these trucks will try to kill you in steep slippery conditions.

    For steep slippery I recommend 4LO in 1st gear. Granted I'm over geared but I don't need brakes very often....

    I would have your brakes checked. If you can't do it take it to someone who can. Make sure you don't have a mechanical problem first. Rusted or pitted brake rotors will cause abs activation on dry road. Once you are sure your brakes are ok and that is was most likely the abs then install an abs shut off switch. You have to be careful with the abs shut off because you will skid. Take things slow at first until you are used to non abs brakes and have fun.

    Thanks guys I was worried I broke something bad but didn't know, and like I said it doesn't happen on the street only offroad in very slippery conditions ie: mud and sand

    Will definitely look into getting that done especially since my truck is on Jack's waiting for my shock to get fixed by down south motorsports... who are pretty awesome by the way

    I killed my abs permanently, just cut a wire and done. No plans to ever turn it on. The only problem is that I could never find a way to kill it without activating the dash light.

    The abs goes batshit crazy on pavement sometimes.... just the slightest hint of a squirrel fart near the road and the truck wants to take 1000ft to stop, buzzing and vibrating like an adult toy on tile.

    As for downsouth motorsports, they are def a standup crew.

    I saw about the abs kill switch and it looks simple as the anytime fog light mod I did. Does it work on prerunner's too? they were talking about doing it on 4x4.

    The one for OR models tricks the computer into thinking the diff lock is engaged to disable ABS. The other is a simple on/ off switch.
