Shesh. You do realize this is not the only thread that talked about this problem. I have helped many people out on this forum. I never said it would not fix anything at all. I have simply mentioned here, and in other threads, that people should be aware that the TSB does not always fix it, and in many cases it comes back. You really should just relax and enjoy yourself more. Gonna pop a blood vessel there. I have had more than just first hand experience, I have worked on many Tacomas in my shop here. I simply mentioned that this condition is not exclusive to Toyota Tacoma trucks. So take a vallium and relax. Don't get all bent out of shape sir.

Hmm, I recently changed my front pads and rotors with aftermarket, but I've had the problem since the factory stuff was on there. I hae finally started listening to the noise closely and as someone above stated mine might be coming from the rear. I know I am about due for shoes, so once I get those done well see what happens.

I wonder if I call Toyota and ask what "updated" parts they use for the squeal I can buy them and personally do the service I don't need them to do it for me just buy the updated parts?

If they do this ^^^ to your rear breaks, it will get rid of your drum brake noise. For the first time since I bought the truck, 9000 miles ago, the breaks are quiet.

Looks like you paid to have some lube thrown on them and regular brake maintenance done.

Nope, it's a 2012 with only 9k miles. All under warranty. Yes they did lube everything but also sanded the pads for glaze. I would definitely have adobe this myself if it wasn't under warranty.

You can see to the right it has a N/C for no charge.

Well, nevermind. My brakes started squeaking again. Its only been one day. Within days they will be back to load as hell. It looks like I might be trading this truck in for something else. I have had problems for 9000 miles now. I just cant live with paying for a truck with a ton of problems. Im very disappointed, because the truck would be to awesome without these problems. Ive never bought a car or truck that ive had to take to the shop this many times, especially new. I am going to talk to toyota first to give them one last chance and if that doesnt work... well i dont know if i will be a toyota owner.

I had this exact issue, i got a lift put on with extended brake lines a few weeks ago and after they bled the lines and refilled them, the squeak has stopped. tried getting them replaced before and it worked for a week or so. Have not heard a squeak since the lines were bled

I need to bring this thread back to life. My truck is so loud when backing out of my driveway in the morning. After that it is as quiet as can be.

Has anyone tried bleeding the lines liked TXaggieTRD suggested?

I almost never back up the Tacoma in the morning. But I've caught this on my wife's new crv.

Once again Tacoma world comes through with great info.

Brake squeal with drum breaks has been going on since the first system was put on a vehicle. The noise is the shoes vibrating against the drum. Over the years they tried every thing springs around the brake drums cam grinding the lining you name it chances are real high it will never be fixed. Also when you are going backwards the brakes do not self energize like they should because the leading shoe is now the trailing one this means it takes more force to apply the brakes so they do not apply as tightly as they would going forward, the result they squeal. Every thing made that has drum breaks at some point will squeal.

Excellent point and exactly what's going on. In addition, a drum break holds brake dust inside more so than the discs do. So that dust settles in the bottom of the drum and when the drum is used the dust will also cause it to squeal.

One moderate solution is to use some brake cleaner and clean the drum brake occasionally and this will help get the trapped dust out of the drum.

What you can try and I did say try it may or may not help is grind a slight angle in the brake lining edge the flat edge top and bottom maybe a 1/8 to 1/4" at some thing like 20*. Put on a dust mask first the dust is bad stuff a file will do the same thing with less dust but take a lot longer. The rear drums on a Tacoma serve the purpose they work well and are better stopping with a loaded truck than the same set up with disks but they some times squeal generally on light application no big deal it only lasts a few seconds I think most people can live through it with out drug treatment.

I am pretty sure it's coming from my front brakes though.

My front brakes did the same thing after I replaced the original pads with aftermarket pads. I think my neighbors were getting upset with the noise. I know my wife was. I ended pulling the pads off to regrease all the moving parts, thinking I didn't put enough on the back off the pad. I noticed the bottom edge of the pad backing plate had been rubbing on the bottom of the caliper. I greased the top and bottom edges of the plate where they could hit the caliper and the noise is gone. Another interesting fact is that the Tacoma "padslap" went away when I replaced the pads. I think the aftermarket pads fit into the caliper a little different than the oem did.

That's a great point. I might take them apart and grease everything up this weekend. It's worth a shot. And it's practically free so I might as well try.

Most of this information is really depressing. I searched for this issue because I've had my truck in the shop twice this year for squeaky brakes when in reverse. I was planning a third trip because the noise has returned again. It's really pretty ridiculous that a permanent fix can't found this day in age.

Best thing I have done was sand the front pad outer edge, some manufactures have a coating around the pads or paint. On the rear it's not uncommon to also sand the shoes and drum and also apply some anti seize on the backing plate where the shoes rub against. Most of the noise I get in the rear is the collected brake dust and water that may get in the drum from wheeling
