Brake upgrade kit.

So I've noticed that since ive added armor, pizza cutters, etc that my braking has decreased. Wouldn't be a big deal if I lived somewhere flat, but i do a lot of mountain driving, itll only get worse with 400lbs of rear bumper and rtt. I'm looking to do a brake upgrade, they seem to fall in to two categories....$1800 kits from wilwood and $500 kits that just look like dressed up OE stuff. Anyone have experience with either?

The $500 kits with painted calipers and vented rotors will not help you stop any better than upgraded pads.

The Wilwood 6 piston kit with .33 bigger rotors will be an improvement.

Put a drum to disc conversion on the back.

EBC or powerstop pads on stock calipers will lend a noticeable improvement for very little money.

Changing to disk in the back is a huge waste of money.

 

Are you running 17" or larger wheels? If not then the choice is easy...

 

Convert the front to Drum. You will increase stopping power 33.5%. You will also have women approaching you on the street asking "Hey big papa, I see you got drums up front. Can I ride with you?"

 

Be prepared for a spongy pedal with those $500 kits.

 

It looks like they are just powder coated stock calipers?

 

Is the parking brake option needed? Stupid question I think, but I already have one....soooooo I'm hoping no is the answer - it's hella-cheaper!

 

stop tech also makes a nice rear conversion kit. they make nice stuff in general. I've had Wilwoods on a Subaru STI in the past and they are easily the best 6 pistons I've used (including against brembo, etc.). Very very high quality.

So looks like I may do slotted rotors, TRD or similar pads, and a brake fluid change. Any recommendations on brake fluid?

 

There are only 2 OEM size brake rotors I am aware of that are actual performance rotors. Most all just take an OEM style blank and slot/drill and call it a performance part when removing material from rotors hurts their performance. StopTech and DBA both build unique rotors from scratch for enhanced performance in thermal capacity and cooling. Check out this thread:
