Brake upgrade questions

So I want to upgrade to brakes which I've always felt were rather lacking on my 2014 longbed, doublecab. I've read through most of the info I could find here. The thing that is holding me up is I have 16in wheels and want to keep them. I've found this BBK but don't really want to spend 2 grand. I read about the Forerunner upgrade but it looks like some people say it doesn't work with 16in wheels and dinner say it does. Any advice on how to get better breaking while keeping the 16in wheels and not spending 2k? Thanks!

 

You checked out anything brembo/Wilwood related? I just did some digging and found a couple of big brake kits with drilled and slotted rotors. I would do a little bit of digging around yourself I was able to find a couple for 200-500$

 

Thanks. I've looked a little but most of what I've seen needed 17in wheels. I'll check Brembo and see if they have an option.

 

If not, I would go for drilled and slotted rotors. That should give you a good performance upgrade along with some good brake pads if anything.

 

Personally I would skip drilled rotors due to premature cracking issues, especially "cheap" rotors.

 

I was looking at slotted, not drilled. I'd be happy with normal rotors as well, really just wanted to find bigger calipers.

 

Look into Ebc Yellow Stuff brake pads. Claims 30% more performance over stock. Designed for track days on cars or towing with trucks. I just went to 35s on my 1st gen and can feel the brakes are taxed. I have 15" rims and like you don't want to buy larger rims and new tires. So I bought a set of Ebc pads and new Stoptech slotted rotors. Parts should be here Friday, will see.

 

stoptech sport pads literally was night and day compared to oem. ide play around with good pads before dropping huge money on an oversized kit.

 

@jmartin2076 , have you read up on the Tundra brake upgrade. From what I've read it improves the 1st gen brakes quite a bit. It won't break your wallet, at least not 2k dollars worth. do some searching, there's several posts with detailed instructions on dong this mod, and it will work with 16 inch wheels.

 

1st gen Tundra brake upgrade uses the same calipers and rotors as stock 2nd gen Tacomas...

 

The OEM caliper already has minimal clearance (like 1/8") with 16" wheels. Anything larger will require 17" wheels.

What brake pads are you running? Some aftermarket pads don't bite as aggressively as OEM.

 

My pass were stock so might try some better ones and steel lines first. They just always felt weak and a bit spongy.

Look into the 5th gen 4runner Brake setup. I have done this and it is much better than the 2nd taco oem brakes. I think it was about 500ish for calipers, rotors, pads and brake dust shield.
