So my 04 is at the dealer for the frame treatment, and they give me a call saying that my front brakes are getting low. I asked how many miles do I have left on them and they made it seem like it was less than 1k miles left on my front pads. They said I have 3mils left on the pads. -A- I really don't have the funds right now to have em done, let alone pay dealership labor rates. - B - I'm also short on time to do them myself with it being the holidays as well. - C - I'm planing on going to vermont for new years weekend, roughly 500 miles round trip. Should I trust the dealerships knowledge or are they trying to sell me a job? I tend to ease on the side of caution... btw i bought the truck with 67k on the clock with new brakes, and currently i have 102k on it.

Mileage is a horrible metric to measure brakes by.

It's not how far you go. It's how often you step on the pedal. Some guys kill pads in 30k. Others have theirs go 80,000. It's very dependent.

Inspection every 10 to 15k miles is a good idea.

brake wear is a function of brake usage..not mileage. my cars are all over the place in terms of brake wear.

I'm at 85k on the original brakes and should get 120k+ at the rate I'm wearing them.

I just changed my original oem front pads out today at 67k miles.

For those who need it done, DON'T have a shop do it! It's a piece of cake and only took about a half hour per wheel. Jack it up, pull the wheel, pull the pins, compress the pistons, and swap pads. Reverse the steps. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! I spent less than $50 bucks in parts for the whole job! Shops were telling me anywhere between 350-500 bucks!
