Make sure the brake caliper lines are not twisted. Try pulling the ABS fuse or relay. See if anything noticeably better happens.

if the brakes release when you pull the hose off the booster, it can only be the booster

Keep me posted. After this issue happened the first time 5 years ago I bought a rebuilt OEM booster off Ebay which lasted for 5 years until one day I woke up to a dead battery and rock hard pedal. When I got a jump the pedal was very touchy and inconsistent and after 2 days the brakes locked up AGAIN on the highway and only releasing the vacuum hose released them. I have now installed a AutoZone booster because Toyota wants $900 for a new OEM unit.

I brought the truck to a local mechanic. He checked the linkage between the pedal and the booster / master cylinder and found that it was out of adjustment. That is weird, because ORW said they didn't touch that linkage when they did the install. Anyway, he compared it to a 2008 4-Runner he had on the lot, and said the adjustment was way off. After he readjusted that linkage the car drives fine. I hope this fixed the problem and it doesn't come back.

So after replacing all that I did my pads and rotors today only to find out I had a rusted out piston and horrible rotted dust boots on the others. Replaced calipers, rotors and pads. Hope this is the fix!

So I ended up replacing the brake booster and it's been fine since (knock on wood). When they lock up again get out of your truck and undo the vacuum from the booster while the trucks still running, if that frees up your brakes like it did for me then it's a bad booster. I really don't have a reason why it happens. This also happened to me years ago with my first car I ever owned.

These names too coincidental! It’s like I’m watching some guy talk to his hand! @Scrapla & @Scarpulalover same brake issues and everything! Freaky! Sorry… go on! Don’t mind me. Forget I was ever here.

I made an account just for this! This legend had the same problem so i honnoured him..

I am currently driving around to try and get my two front breaks to seize again.

here is an idea: both of my front wheen axles are warm all the time. Maybe that after a certain distance they become hot enough so the heat expands the hydraulics or even galiper pistons or disc etc..

I will uptate next time they seize

Ah good luck. My truck is just a 2WD so no front axles. Mine only locked up on the highway. In normal side streets they worked but the pedal felt very weird like it didn't have a consistent feel like it normally did. Once I replaced the booster everything went back to normal and the pedal felt great again.
