I just bought my first vehicle an 06 regular cab 4x4 manual 4cyl. It's got 140,000 on it. Whats the first thing you would inspect on it to make sure it's road-worthy?
I don't think the shocks/struts have ever been replaced (judging by the used state of the rest of the truck and the bumpy/jumpy ride on the hwy) so I'm thinking of putting in the 5100 Bilsteins all around and AAL's. I only want 0-1.5" of lift so as not to wear or break anything indirectly later on!
Got a couple of quotes for the bilstein kit + installation that seem outrageous (one was 1200 and the other 900). What say you, Taco people!?

I would call a Toyota dealership with the vin#, to make sure your Tacoma had the LSC performed, because you have until March 31, 2016 to have your frame inspected. If it fails you get a new frame and if it passes you get the framed sprayed with CRC.

$900 for a suspension replacement with parts included isn't crazy. But if I can do a suspension install, then you can, too.

I've seen the posts about not needing a spring compressor? I'm sure I could do the suspension install, I feel like a might just order all the parts and make it work to save about 300 in labor.

I ordered my Bilstein 5100 shocks for both the front and rear from Jet.com and with the 15% discount, I ended up paying $255 and shipping was free too. I was going to install the rear shocks myself and was debating if I can do the fronts also, but either way it will need an alignment after they are installed.

For someone who has never done suspension work before, would you recommend installing the front shocks myself? Have you ever seen the video of someone installing the front shocks without using a spring compressor? Would you recommend that method to install the front shocks?

    Thanks,
    Mark

Welcome to the rare RC 4x4 club!!

Edit: I would check and/or replace the usual...spark plugs, air filter, oil & filter change, PCV valve, clean throttle body, front & rear differential fluid, transfer case fluid, transmission fluid, grease driveshaft, check antifreeze, brake fluid, etc.

If you records of the above, obviously dont do it again. Just things I would check/replace when buying a used vehicle.

Thanks! I had an 01 a while back that got totalled by some elderly folks, and it took me 8 years to find another suitable one!

I never installed my first set of shocks until I did it.

You got to do it sometime. Once you do it, you are now a pro.

The bolt type spring compressors are only $40. Buy them once and be done with it. I never had utube to help me learn. You have a huge advantage. Go for it! Save some money.

Yes, that is the video I watched as well as one other. I just wondered if it is as easy as these videos look like they are. I know the rear shocks would be very straight forward, but I didn't know if the fronts are for first timers too.

If your frame has passed inspection, you must get new rear leaf springs, because there is a recall. I don't know where you live, they are slowly doing each geographic area at a time and mine just became available in my area.

Welcome to TW by the way!!

Yeah today is the first time I'm hearing of the recalls, I'm going to call a dealer tomorrow and get her inspected.

Update, I called the dealership about the leaf spring recall and they ordered the parts (per my VIN# I assumed). 2 weeks later, they were ready to install. I drop my truck off and they call me the next day to inform me that they had order the wrong parts (order for extended cab). They said it would be another 2-3 weeks. It will have been a month this Thursday, so I called them today. Still no parts, but should be there in a few days.

The front is very straight forward. Although it is helpful to have two people when positioning the sway bar for reassembly. Me and a buddy of mine installed Bilstein 5100 adjustables on the front a week or two ago and it was a piece of cake. I put mine on the lowest setting because I have the 2.7L and it still raised the front close to an inch. I also installed new OEM springs to replace the worn out crap that was on there.
