We bought a brand new2023 TRD OR 2 weeks ago and it has been in for alignment twice---got it straight the second time and while overlooking the side of the bed noticed a blemish in the paint.

Is this poor paint by Toyota or something that is caused by a rock. We live 30 miles from dealer and want to get your thoughts on what you think it is. If its because of crap prep-work, we will take it back to the dealer again for the issue.

Included zoom shot as well, it looks like its cracked from underneath---just don't want it to spread and rust.

    Thanks!!

I’m no painter but it does look to be busted out and not in.

There is a goodwill campaign (probably not the actual name of it) by Toyota to remedy the 3rd Gen paint issues, which are well- documented on TW.

Good luck getting it sorted out.

Any mass production vehicle you’ll find some paint blemishes. I wouldn’t sweat that you don’t want your factory paint disturbed over something that small. Why did you have to get aligned? Steering off center? I’ll say my 2023 sr5 steering is perfectly straight. Some other complaints but she drives straight lol

Had a similar issue in 2018 when my wrangler came in. Dealer removed the panel stripped and painted matched it perfectly. Was told the cause was Robbie robot laying to thick and too many coats. Do know but if that's truly the cause but it was fixed perfectly and still looks great today.

The only issue I have about just leaving it, is that in Florida we have so much humidity and rain and if this crack is to the metal, it will eventually flake off, rust, peel.....gonna take it to dealer just to see what they think, hopefully they can just fix it.

Looks pretty similar, i could care less about the size or shape of it, i just know that is about to peel and spread eventually and this truck will be ours for some time.

Gonna have them look at it this week. They have a in-house body shop there at the dealership

Yeah, that’s a pain issue. That certainly goes all the way down to primer.

It veered to the right from the start..had to take it back twice for them to figure it out. Straight as an arrow now.

I get that you want your new truck to be perfect (at least for awhile), but damn! And since you asked, it looks like a small rock chip to me. I would put a small dab of touch up paint on it and call it a day. And even if it was a (very) minor factory defect, I'd still do the same rather than drive 30 miles one way to the dealer to point something that smalll out. But do whatever will help you sleep at night.

    Carry on!

I also have a 2023 OR silver and has similar paint flaw on roof near windshield. This could be a huge problem in future if it rust through and causes stress crack in windshield (already rusting). Took to dealer and they said paint chip. Not a chip as there is also a line of paint an inch long in same area where rust developing underneath. Plan to return to dealer and talk with supervisor. I have 20 year old cars always outside in rain and sun that do not have these type flaws, and never been waxed...

I wouldn't worry about it, and my work parking lot is next to a road salt silo...

Tacoma body panels don't really rust. Look how pristine the bodies are on these 1st gens:

You'll be hard pressed to find any 3rd gen Tacoma with rusted bedsides.

It possible your truck suffered rock chips in transport to your dealer. The folks that load them into boxcars basically act like rallycross drivers.

That looks like a small impact mark to my eyes. Noticed a lot of paint nips on my 2023 Tacoma. Perhaps the paint methods down in Mexico are not up the the standards in Japan?

There are actually several spots. I was just curious if Toyota had paint issues to be honest (I read so many issues with white paint). Never had paint issues on any of our new vehicles. If i created the paint chips, so be it. When I buy a new vehicle with paint chips already "installed", no thanks LOL

Don't worry, 4Runner folks complain of shitty paint, too, and those are built on the same line as the Lexus GX.

In hawaii I see entire roofs of recent year tacomas covered in rust. This includes all colors of paint. What is up with that?

That looks like the beginnings of filiform corrosion. If so, that panel will need to be sanded and repainted, or it will continue to spread. Touch-up paint won't help at all.

OP, your comments on your new truck needing two alignments caught my attention. I also have a 23 TRD OR and it had the same problem, mine constantly favored the left and was back to the dealer for alignment issues. Even after two attempts by the dealer to correct this, at speeds over 50 mph the truck still drifted left. At slow speeds it was perfect but after several months of this I gave up and upgraded all 4 tires. Immediately the issue was gone and the truck drives straight and true. I say this because I had a Chevy Colorado prior to my Tacoma with goodyear tires and that truck did the exact same thing, pulled left even after a good alignment. I have had no luck with goodyear tires, and I won't buy them ever again.

I am not a MASSIVE fan of Goodyear, but their Duratrac's are tried and true for years. They are a great on/off-road tire for what it's worth. I think it was a just a lack of local dealership not knowing what they were doing that cost us two trips there to resolve the issue.

No idea, but we are literally not entirely pleased by what we see. The problem is, it looks like paint is an issue along every car manufacturer these days. Bring back lead paint! LOL j/k
