This. I have a spot like yours OP on my roof right by the windshield that was definitely from a rock chip. Mine has the filaments spreading outward from center beneath the paint. I was told that the spot can be sanded and blended but to be repaired properly the whole panel will have to be re-cleared.

Since this post I contacted a well known collision center and they said it's a paint defect from Toyota, not a rock chip. We contacted the local dealer and they said we have 3 year 100% warranty on paint.

That’s great news. And yea I didn’t mean to imply yours was rock chip it definitely looks like a defect from factory. Sounds like dealer will make it right!

My son just took the silver taco in for dealer to inspect the paint problem. Dealer took pics and said they will send to Toyota Corporate and see what response is. Can someone explain what the warranty would be on paint. I have a written document that says rust forming under paint is covered under warranty. Although Toyota says only rust perforation (a hole) is covered for 3 years. Seems to me if the entire paint fails within 3 years it should be covered.

We stopped at our dealership yesterday to show them the spot, they said it would probably be covered under warranty but would have to send it off for verification. She told us since its so small (about the size of a grain of rice) and its under the clearcoat, to leave it be until more scratches come along, because they have to pain the entire panel anyway and would fix any other scratches on the truck under the warranty.

That being said, 3 year/36k warranty on the paint.

I just heard back from dealer and response from Toyota. They say my rust spots are from rock chips or a possible astroid impact (JK). Any case, I will get out the touch up pait to try to keep in from rusting more and call it a day.

I have read the Toyota warranty and they way I read it the paint is not really covered. Only a complete rust through hole would be covered. Thoughts?

That's how I've always read most manufacturers paint warranty. In this op's case I would have it fixed now for free like I did with my jeep. The more you wait the more finger pointing or games can happen. In my case I told them fix it or I walk already knowing they have the ability to Bill it back to Chrysler/jeep. Which the local toyota will also do for the op, it will cost the local dealer nothing.

what I read on Toyota.com, under the warranty section it states 60 month, unlimited miles for sheet metal corrosion. I’m dealing with the same issue, rust near windshield
