Knowledge is power. Read the owner's manual which was written with the help of Toyota engineers. The dealer is going to want to do extra things to get more of your hard-earned money. Do what the manual says not me.

don't forget to change out the windshield washer juice as soon as you get the truck, it could turn acidic and burn out the washer pump motor, better to be safe than sorry

Some of the shavings stay in the sump and don't get recirculated by the filter and oil pump. They don't pose particular harm, but the only way to remove them would be by draining the oil.

Right, they stay in the sump, so they can stay there until 10k miles. No need to change the oil at 3k or 5k and get all worked up because someone saw metal shavings.

My 1st oil change was at 700miles and now every 5k after that. I also changed my rear diff oil at 5k I believe. Some folks will say “ooo! That’s not wat da TOYOa Tex recommend! R u smorter then them!!”..... fresh oil NEVER hurt an engine! I’ll spoil my truck with fresh fluids in abundance before I listen to the 10k per oil change guys. YOLO

Yep, your truck and your money. If I were buying a used Tacoma and it came down to two which where equal in every way except one had the oil changed religiously at 5K and the other at 10K guess which one I'd pick.

I still can't understand 10k mi intervals, and no break-in period. But I will usually listen to the engineers who designed the engine...

A lot of erroneous information and potentially wasted money here in my experience. Just follow the owners manual for break in and maintenance. It’s very clear. I have had 11 Toyota pickups since 1977. Never had issues with any of them following the manuals recommended break in and service intervals.

I have an interesting problem. I've had my truck for 5 months and I've put 1500 miles on it. At that rate it'll be 2 more years before my first scheduled oil change at 10k. What do you do in that situation?

Sure. That makes sense under normal circumstances. My situation seems abnormal though. The easiest thing to do would be to not change the oil for another 2 years. I'm just not sure that's the best thing to do.

I only drive my truck 2k miles a year, so I just change annually. I'm about to hit the 2 year mark and still unsure on whether I want to change the diff fluid. My truck spends 99% of its time in a climate controlled garage.

Because it’s not a high performance engine. These engines go for 200k miles+ by average consumers who turn the key and go. Don’t over think it is all I’m saying.

NEVER let science enter into the discussion where emotions and illogic rule. :crapstorm:

If someone feels more comfortable changing their oil every 5,000 miles or every 100 miles, it's their call. It's the logic of "I change my oil every XXX miles and have never had a problem" that is flawed. Obviously, the 10K interval works for Toyota and is proved by Blackstone.

Any oil change, be it every 10 miles. 100 miles, or 1,000 miles up to the 10K threshold will result in no material difference in engine wear as the recommended 10K interval.

Again, it comes down to each owner's comfort level and wallet. It's apparent that many of the Tacomas here are people's main ride/pride and joy. For me, it's a truck I use to drive on the beach and haul stuff to the dump. I'm fortunate (and grateful) enough to have a "play" car. The Taco is sitting in my garage in Saint Augustine while I am in Houston 90% of the time right now. It hasn't even been driven in two months!
I prefer to just follow the Toyota recommended intervals, which are the same as my Audi's. In Europe, they laugh at the American propaganda of needing an oil change every 3,000 miles. :anonymous:
