Just under 1000 miles on the truck. Pulled apart the factory filter, which is a beautifully crafted, made in Japan Denso. Part number 90915-10009. I would recommend this filter. It was truly precision beauty inside and out. Replaced it with the made in Thailand one 90915-YZZN1. I will by buying the -10009 in the future if I can find it.

Look at the gunk in the pleats. Toyota says I can run this oil 10,000 miles on a first fill? I don't think so.

Lots of RTV looking bits, and some shiny specs of metal. Yes the filter did its job. But I don't want this crap in the engine. The (clean and new) drain bucket had lot of specs of RTV in it, and one silver metal shaving. There's maybe 50 pleats, and I picked through most of them. One coppery looking fleck, and some tiny metal flecks in them.

Filter looks like it could have gone for a lot longer. The pleats were in great condition, no signs of being overloaded. I just wanted to cut it open and see. Plus pulling the filter releases some suction which lets another 200-300ml drain out of the engine and there's about a 250ml in the oil cooler and filter too. I really don't like the idea of little globs of goo in those cooler passages.

    Edit:

One of these Toyota specific funnels is SUPER helpful. Never bought one till this truck, and have been fighting with wobbly funnels and oil dribbles for 25 years on cars. It screws right into the oil filler spot and you'll never spill a drop again. Wish I knew about this sooner. The oil fill cap is in the middle of the engine and unless you are just godlike at pouring oils, this will save a lot of mess.

Looked the same when I did the 5k oil changes on my 3rd gens. Completely normal and the filter did it's job.

Edit: Normal for first oil change

Good luck with that, that part number oil filter only comes from the production line

I'm curious, what did you use to dismantle the oil filter?

A knipex mini bolt cutter. It was the strongest thing I had that didn't produce a bunch of spurious metal shavings. I cut at the crimp near the silver plate with holes in it and then drained the excess oil and slid the fliter out.

I think it's probably a good idea to do the 1st oil change a little sooner than recommended. 1000 miles is overkill, but I'd not go 10,000 either.

After that 10,000 mile, or 6 months whichever comes 1st is fine. Lots of high mile vehicles from every manufacturer out there who did so. That is the way I've done my 07 since new. It's getting close to 250,000 now and I've never added a drop of oil between oil changes. The guy in NC who died recently with his truck at 1.6 million miles on it did 8,000-10,000 mile oil changes. Worked for him.

I am all about doing oil changes early, especially on a vehicle I plan to keep for the long haul. I did my first oil change on my 21 around 1000 miles as well and found similar break-in glitter as your 2nd and 3rd photos, but none during my 5k and 10k mile changes. I'm running the TRD filters on mine (bought in bulk when I first got the truck), but I believe they are discontinued now for the 3g.

Not worth the time, change every 10k with whatever synthetic is on sale.

The car care nuts general advice is “whatever the manufacturer recommends, cut it in half”. I trust that advice, except on my Land Rover, 21k oci? Nope. 5k please and thank you.

LED interior, license plate, and fog lights. More to come.
I felt like every 10,000 miles was too much but every 5,000 miles was kinda overkill for a decent synthetic oil. I decided to just split the difference and go with the "traditional" 7500 mile interval for synthetic.

This seems exceptionally common and TBH not particularly surprising. There's a few videos from the 4Runner forums on first-fill OCs with similar bits of engine crud.

Here's one I found from a 1500 mile oil change. Skip to 4:00.
First break in oil change on the 2023 TRD Pro 4runner. (youtube.com)

Of course every 2022+ Tundra owner on the forums is changing oil and looking through it like a miner panning for gold.

I’ve always changed the oil and filter on a new vehicle somewhere between 500 and 1000 miles. The BMW people thought I was nuts.

I do tire rotates and oil changes at 5k intervals.

Just seems to me 1k miles the engine hasn’t built up enough wear material yet to change it out. 3k miles make more sense to me let it build up and flush it out with the oil change
