I'm sure this is a topic that has been covered... I searched it and came up empty. I only bring it up because I ride (Triumph Speed Triple) and in the motorcycle community there is a great deal of debate on the subject. Never bothered with it in regards to a truck or car so just wanted some opinions from the Tacoma family.
With my bike, I changed oil/filter at 100, 300, 600, and 1200 miles and pretty much rode it like I stole it from 300 miles on. In 1st gear I slowly but steadily went from idle to 7 grand and dropped throttle to 2 grand then back up to 7 grand and shift. Ran 2nd gear up and down and back up then shifted... etc. Each time I changed oil I found shavings in oil. Less each time. At 1200 miles it was clean but I went to full synthetic at that point and ain't looked back. I am of the belief you should drive it like it's gonna be driven from the start, but I am wondering if anyone has changed oil early and found shavings? And if you guys think it's necessary with these trucks?

my perspective is: it is a Toyota. People have been abusing they hell out of them for a long time and Toyota is solid engineering. I doubt you would be able to tell in the long term if you did any 'break in' or not.

everyone knows British engineering is 'fragile'

    My ducatis

    I do 900 miles
    1500 miles
    Then once a year

    My sports cars
    600 miles
    1000 miles
    Then once a year

    My tacomas
    5000 miles
    Then every 6 months

Taliban and UN abuse the heck out of these trucks I am not going to over maintain my Toyota trucks and waste money when they can literally run on water or vegetable oil

Do what your owners manual calls for and your warranty is fine.

If you think its a forever truck, change it at 1,000, then go the the condition prescribed OCIs

On Honda CBR bikes, the engine and transmission are in the same block and use the same oil. If the Triumph is designed the same way, then those shavings are probably from the transmission.

You are going to get a ton of recommendations, its your truck so change it when you feel comfortable. That said, I did my first change at 1500, then at 5000, and now every 5000.

Well, all makes of bikes have the same argument, but I can tell you my Triumphs have been solid as hell! I've owned 4 and never had any issues. They back their product to hell and back!!!... as far as Toyota is concerned this is my first one and from what I been reading they could care less about the truck after you buy it, or you for that matter. I bought it because of their rep and alleged reliability and the resale value. Since I got it, I like it and have personally had no issues thus far. Just curious about break in because it does matter at the end of the day. I never cared in cars or trucks because I get a new one each year and a half up till now. I want to keep this one a while if I can so I have a renewed interest in treating her right.

I plan on going with what toyota maintenance schedule shows except for one thing. I'm having it changed at 1000mi break-in for my own peace of mind. 10k for the first oil change is way too long IMO.

I have toyota care with full synthetic. I went in at 5K and the dealership said it didn't need changed until 10K per factory recommendation, if they screw it up before my lease is up I'll make them pay for it or get a new one next time as long as I can get a manual.:burnrubber:

Just remember the maintenance light comes on every 5K to remind you to get the oil changed, but its a good idea to rotate your tires at that time if you dont.

I have the toy maintenance plan too. I'm just old school I guess and will change it myself if I have too but the dealer said he will change it for me tomorrow when they do the Ecgs bushing and trans update.

I don't keep any car over 3 years, so what Toyota recommends is what I do. It's so much easier this way...

Is the ECGS under warranty or are you just having them do it?

Toyota can pound sand. The warrantee isn't for the length of time I plan on owning her.
500mi, 3k and every 3k after. Oil and filters are cheaper than motors.

They did the bearing at 350 miles. It worked for 150 miles. Told service manager about bushing. Toyota gave him ok to try bushing. Completely covered under warranty.

That's awesome. Especially with a lift. I hope my dealer will be that cool if I have the issue (seems like a crap shoot as to if you will)

    Truck stuff
I followed the "driving" break in in the owners manual. No towing until after 500(not that i have or plan on towing), no hard acceleration for first 500 or 1k, no long periods in low gear early on ect. I dont remember it all, just check your manual. I did change my oil at 1k for my piece of mind because i plan on keeping this truck for a very long time and wanted to check for metal shavings. I was also going on a road trip and if there was metal shavings didnt want to risk having them cause any internal problems. Besides that i check my oil regularly and change as needed. So far the oil has looked to be in really good shape for over 5k miles driven. 10k seems too long to wait but then again i dont really know anything about the 0w20 synthetic Toyota put in the truck. Its way diff than the 10w30 I've ran in all my past vehicles.

Wow you guys are making me feel guilty. I was gonna do it at 1k then I decided to wait till 5k I'm at 2.2k now feeling like I should change it. I've always been overboard on everything on my vehicles. I decided to treat this one as a regular vehicle and not some super high maintenance track queen (cause it's not) but my ocd is starting to take over.

They service manager has been working hard to fix the issue. No excuses or B.S. test drove it himself when I reported it.
