Towing for sure is a bad idea. I think modern cars will be fine if your not abusive. I would forgo off road for the first thousand as well.

I've kept my I4 mostly under 2000 rpm for 80,000 miles.

Yes, a lot of opinions and hearsay. However, the recommended break-in procedure is published in the owner's manual.

Engine is one of the items you are breaking in. The the 200-mile limit is for the brake pads. The 500-mile limit is for the rear diff. The 1000-mile mark is for the engine.

Just shift amongst 6-5-4 every now and then to vary the rpms. That is, if you plan to keep the truck for a long time. Statistically, only 2.5% of Tacoma owners keep their trucks past 200,000 miles. http://www.popularmechanics.com/car.../?mag=pop&list=nl_pnl_news&src=nl&date=022516

It's not the % of owners who keep their vehicles past 200k miles, it's regardless of the number of times the vehicle changes ownership. Those stats are from the total number of vehicles that make it past 200k miles (or more accurately, of the 12 million or whatever vehicles they had access to records for) 2.5% are Tacomas. This is why the F150 is at the top of that list. Because Ford sells 600k-700k of those each year, so percentage wise there are just more of them on the road to begin with.

The "Break In" period is for everything that turns in the engine, transmission, drive line, transfer cases, rear ends, axles, brakes, etc. They are all assembled to factory specs or tighter and need a short while to seat in with their partner pieces. There is some grinding going on in those first few miles. It is all a matter of risk. A matter of piece of mind. The manufacturers don't want to replace components early under warranty nor, on the other hand, get a bad reputation for reliability. For myself, I always break in per the manufacturers recommendation or easier.

That's the wrong interpretation and is readily contradicted by some low-volume models being ranked very high. The Sequoia (12,000 sales/yr) is ranked twice as high as the Taco (150,000-180,000 sales/yr), for example.

Going to the horse's mouth, the actual iSeeCars article gives a clearer explanation: http://blog.iseecars.com/2016/03/03/longest-lasting-vehicles-2016/
"iSeeCars.com analyzed over 12 million cars sold in 2015 from model years 1981 through 2016. Models that were not in production as of the 2015 model year were excluded from further analysis, as were models with fewer than 10,000 cars sold. For each model, the number of cars with at least 200,000 miles was expressed as a percentage of the total number of cars sold."

So for example, out of the 12 million cars iSeeCars had access to data, 1 million may have been Tacomas. Out of those Tacomas, 25,000 were over 200,000 miles, hence 2.5%.

    Extremely high speeds.
Does Toyota mean over 110 mph for 15 minutes?
