100 mph, and according to the owner's manual you are supposed to increase tire pressure by 3 psi when you do it.

Took it for a long drive with a lot of changing speeds yesterday just to make myself feel better. I feel better.

Back to highway driving today. Truck feels great and gas mileage is climbing. I'm at 750 miles.

    Loud as hell URD exhaust!
Ive always broken in my Tacomas by varying the speed for the first 1000 miles, nothing over 50 mph and 2k rpms. At 1000 miles I change the oil and then go out and bounce it off of the rev limiter a few times. After that its ready to go.

This is my 3rd new Tacoma since 2001 and Ive never had any engine or drivetrain problems with this method.

Dealer told me first oil change is at 16,000kms. Is that right, appears extreme. I though 1,000kms was about right?

I saw something about this in another thread. I think it said that the owners manual states 5000 miles (to lazy to convert) for first oil change and 10,000 mile intervals after that. I don't have my truck yet so I cannot verify. But you may want to check your owners manual and hold the dealer to that.

Yeah, he showed me the schedule it said first service at 10,000kms. But, he said they won't change the oil then, so if I want I can skip it. He said they only change at 16,000!

I just sold my Tacoma and picked up a WRX (probably going to be an unpopular move on here). Anyway there are so many rules in the manual and that the dealership reviews and has you sign paperwork stating they reviewed the break in procedure with you.

    For the first 1,000 miles

    -stay out of boost
-no more than one hour at the same speed
    -not to exceed 4,000 RPM
    -not to exceed 80 MPH
-limit downshifting if going above 3,500 RPM
    -91 or above octane
    -no excessive idle
-do not exceed 3,000 RPM until engine temp is at least 150 degrees
    -long driving under high temps

Obviously some of these are tips more than requirements but the fact they went thru them before you drove off strikes some fear into you. So hard to stay out of boost!!!

So a Toyota dealership is recommending going against what Toyota says. Are they free oil changes? If so and they are not wanting to do the free one first for you I would still get the oil changed. I have seen a lot of people post having metal shavings in their first oil change. When I get my truck I will probably do my first oil change at 1000 miles then again at 5000 then follow the recommended service schedule.

Not free, no. He was just a decent sales guy trying to save me cash.
But, I'm not comfortable either waiting to 16. I'll get done way before that. Tks

...how?? Do you only drive on city streets?

I'm genuinely curious, granted I've never had a 4cyl Tacoma (had a few 4cyl cars though), and freeway driving always put me at around 3500-4000 RPMs in 6th gear (manual transmissions).

Of the few engines I've had the pleasure to build I've had the greatest success doing an easy break in of the camshaft, especially with flat tappet lifters and some decent spring pressure. Then find a long and winding road and just hammer it in, hard acceleration hard engine braking get it hot and up in the rev band. Get heavy manifold vacuum and heavy cylinder pressure to seat the rings. After that, dump the oil and run and you like.

Hello all, new here. I know this is old thread. New owner and i agree w the breakin in hard method. Past experience with vw 1.8 and then an a scion 1nzfe rebuild. I took to a local bridge on a large causeway and went up ripping it thru all gears under load, as in uphill, not full red but would touch it, and back down slowly. These engines run hard. The vw, well its a vw. Hard to kill but the scion, that thing is rippin (i kno its scion) right now. Let the pressure build and get shit all over up in there. W my new tac. I think will do same. Any opinions from guys that feel theyve done a proper break-in on their engines. Love to hear your thoughts also how does everyone feel about the chips or modding ecu?
