About a year ago I started having this Break Override Malfunction light come up. I did some troubleshooting but since the light would disappear fairly quick after a few seconds I didn’t pay much attention. One day it took about 30 min to disappear so I decided to take it to the dealership. They were too busy that day so they ask me to leave the truck but I was out of town so I decided to take it back with me. They told me back then that most of the times it’s the battery so I just bought a new battery since didn’t have many options being out of town having to drive back that day (13 hour drive). It worked for about a week then the message came back on. One day it blocked my truck from starting up for hours and a guy came to help me troubleshoot with his scanner and told me the break light switch that is under the brake pedal was acting up. So I bought a new one. That solved the issue for over a year! But recently the message started to come back on but would disappear within the first few seconds. Yesterday it blocked my truck from starting up again and of course I was out of town again… It finally started up after trying disconnecting battery, switch, fuses, etc. Last thing I did before it worked was press the break several times fairly hard.

Messages came back on 3 times since then, disappearing after a few seconds. I noticed it comes back on when I press break while turning or slightly pressing the break. It disappears as I press the break firmly. Any thoughts? I will be replacing the switch again just because that worked before for about a year with no issues but would like to dig into the root cause…

Sounds like the switch. You either have very bad luck or there is something that is burning out your switch.

Check your taillight bulbs as well. Sounds dumb, there's been a few threads where a burned out brake light bulb caused the issue.

Can you use a meter to check resista ce through the brake light switch with it both closed and open? Please post results if you do- I'm not sure if there's anyone who knows what the range should be, but at least its more information for anyone else having this issue in the future.

yeah, if you have aftermarket lights or modifications to that circuit, I would look at those.
Also, was the replacement switch OE? Could also be a bad switch replaced by an aftermarket low quality switch that just didn't last very long. Aftermarket parts can be hit or miss, some are very good brands, and others sell shit on Amazon, Autozone, ebay, etc.

So I replaced the switch today and noticed it was very hot and decided to open it to look at it. See pictures below. My question now is, does anyone know what the current should be on those 2 circuits? Does it have a relay?
The plastic was melting and getting onto the metal connections…

Btw, I have not replaced the break lights or added any accessories other than the grill lights and those go into the headlights fuse connection. Bought brand new too so…

Not trying to start anything, but do you have your left foot on the brake?

Not really much you can do other than just put another brake switch in it

It was mentioned a couple of times I think, well at least once, but you never answered the question of where did you buy the 1st (and now 2nd) Brake (not break) light switch???

I am going to take a wild guess and say Auto Zone, and if so, their electrical parts as well as a lot of other parts, are junk... I recommend a Toyota dealer part...

And for the most part, don't buy the economy line of parts from a parts store...

Here is the OEM Stop Lamp Switch (brake light switch)...
Toyota 84340-69025 Switch Assy, Stop Lamp

    https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem...year=2019&submodel=&extra1=&extra2=&filter=()

The dealer sites are down for maintenance...
