There are apparently a few different fixes for it depending on what the tech finds. In some cases they will even replace the whole assembly.

Did you bring it up to them, or did they bring it up to you? I had the light replaced on my truck a few years back as well so I'm curious how the conversation went. My dealer did a number on my clothes hooks, so I don't love them opening it back up, but this would certainly beat a future leak. When yours originally leaked did it lead to any sort of interior damage (mold etc?) I'm just curious what, if any, checks they did.

Girl at the desk mentioned it as soon as I started talking to her. She said it looks like there is a recall for the third brake light. I told her they ready fixed it a few years back. At that time they did replace the headliner. Other than that there were no noticeable issues in the interior. I was also not impressed when it leaked originally considering multiple trim pieces were scratched, dome light was not clipped in completely etc. Especially annoying when they said the work was done by a "headliner specialist." But since the light was originally replaced it has been dry. Now I can only assume I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Now all they need to do is put out a recall for the leaking roof racks on the 5th Gen rav4. If it's the same rate as this they'll have to wait another 2 years. Considering that problem can actually have serious safety impacts I'm stunned they haven't addressed it but they address this light lol.

so my concern is that mine is currently not leaking and what happens if they replace it then it actually starts to leak?...lol

Mines listed under the recall, but doesn't appear to be leaking. Given my experience with incompetent techs at my local dealer I think I'm going to hold off until I notice a problem. Only recall in almost 5 years too.

It doesn’t really rain in Seattle. Just a constant dreary mist.

Looks like the seal on mine has pulled away from the cab. Anyone else have the same issue?

Mine had no leaks prior to this and I had it done anyway. They advised me not to take it to a car wash for 24 hours after the procedure was completed so they definitely used a sealer in there. They advised that the old seal was going to fail over time even though mine hadn't (yet). So far so good.

There are also problems with the robots over tightening the bolts from the factory. So in some cases once that seal dries out and separates there's a decent gap in at least one side of the light assembly. But they will replace the whole thing if necessary from what I've heard. I'm scheduled to take mine in Saturday.

Dealing with this now noticed water in the back in the summer. A damp smell in the car lifted up the back seats found mold everywhere. Steam cleaned it I thought it was from my 7 year old leaving the back window open. This winter noticed more and more condensation in the truck then had a heavy rainstorm the other day. Got in the truck the next day while back seat soaked all down the back and could see water coming in from the brake light. Called service they basically laughed at me said they never heard of such a thing I’m 3,000km out of warranty. Ran my vin number never popped up for recall clearly my truck is one of the ones affected though. Production was March 2016. Beginning to think this is my last Toyota at this point to many problem went wrong right out of warranty. Drivers side heated seats went at 60,100km they wouldn’t cover. AC cracked at 60,500km BSM went this summer im beginning to think it’s related to the water leak now from the brake light possibly. Rear dome light also won’t turn on probably due to water from the brake light. Right now I have 70,000km on the truck so still feels to new to be having this many problems.

Mine has been in the dealership for 3 weeks now while they fix all that. Gave me a loaner taco to drive at no cost. Guess they found lots of mildew or whatever and they replacing, cleaning, coating etc.

Just so you know, this brake light swap is a royal pain in the butt.

I upgraded to the Tacoma lifestyle third brake light; then back to another oem light. The tacomalifestyle version isn't waterproof by itself and the trim ring didn't fit properly. Plus the nut posts are half the length and the nuts are 8mm instead of the factory 10mm. There's a few posts I made about it a while back on "what have you done to your third gen today."

After all that I don't care for the oem look, so I ordered another third brake light from Amazon (same one as tacomalifestyle, but cheaper on amazon) and another trim ring gasket, but haven't gotten around to it. I think that one might work if I can find the motivation to install it.
