Hey TW, first post here. I promise I used the search function and did my best to research before making a new thread.
I have a 17’ TRD OR and about 7k-10k miles ago (creeping on 100k) I changed the pads and rotors. I ended up going with Brembo pads and rotors (Brembo 09.B461.11 rotors, Brembo P83066N ceramic). A few weeks ago I started getting a grinding noise and could feel grinding/vibration through the brake pedal. Noticed that it was only really when the brakes were getting hot though or after driving for a bit. It only happened when I was coming to a stop (<10mph).

This last weekend I took the tires off, took off the pads to inspect and the rotors thinking maybe the dust plate was catching it or dirt/rocks were back there or something but nothing. Reassembled everything as everything seemed fine. Pads still had lots of life left. No hot spots that I could see on the rotors. Was fine for a day or two and now it’s doing it again. Today it did it with a deep “whurr” noise (I tried to get a video but couldn’t get one).

Pedal is stiff and not squishy so doubt it’s the drums…feel free to call me an idiot lol, first taco and just trying to learn and figure this out. Anyone have this happen to them? Chalk it up as bad choice of rotors/pads and go back to OEM? Much appreciate all of you, I’ve learned a lot here in TW so thought id run to the experts lol. BIG thank you for any advice!

Put caliper grease on the edges of the pad backing plates and on the retention pins.

Make sure the spreader clips are installed correctly. You can also experiment with running two spreader clips per caliper. This evens out the forces on the pads.

Did you bed the brakes properly when new? You might try lightly scuffing the rotors with 400 grit and re-bedding. Same with the drums.

The sides of the drum shoes might be rubbing the contact points of the mounting plate. Anti-seize or brake grease helps.

I used pad grease, I didn’t apply it liberally but I didn’t short it either.

I haven’t even touched the drums I only did the front. Ive thought to pull the drums off and see how they’re doing but wanted to see if it may be anything else prior to seeing if it’s the drums. Everything I see symptom wise didn’t point to it, but doesn’t hurt to see! I feel like everyone needs differently but I did take about 5 passes from 30 to 5, then 40 to 5 etc with adequate brake pressure but not slamming on the brakes if that makes sense. Would you say that’s a proper way?

    The process sounds about right.

If the grinding noise is only at low speed stops I'll bet it's the sides of the drum shoes rubbing on the contact points of the backing plates. Put some brake grease or anti seize on the contact points.

    Working now a list
Did the Brembo setup increase braking performance?

I have been debating between them vs oem.

Just noticed a few Amazon reviews claim those Brembo pads are noisy. Could be normal.

Is there a break in period for the brembos?
I know the TRD ones require you to drive up to 60mph then brake as hard as possible without slamming it, a couple of times.

Oh yeah, I certainly noticed a difference! In a good way lol. I chose Brembo because they seem to be pretty reputable. I've seen alot of other brands mentioned on TW too but the Brembo blanks seemed to be a consensus here so I chose those. I really like them pending this issue isn't coming from them (which it sounds like it's not).

I'm not sure if there's a specific manner in bedding Brembo brakes...but I bed them and took about 5 passes from 30 to 5, then 40 to 5 etc with adequate brake pressure but not slamming on the brakes. I can say that if I slam on the brakes full pressure, it certainly stops pretty good on the dot. LOL.

Well…took off the drums. They were super dirty but still had plenty of life left (3.5mm). Cleaned them all up, put the drum back on tire back on went for a drive and still get that grind and “whurrrr” sound coming to a stop. BUT I was able to get a video the best that I could…

Tried to embed it but having issues.

Any suggestions on good pads? Weird how it would be those but I’ve seen weirder things. Might as well swap the pads before I bring it to a shop.

I'm planning to stay with oem pads, rotors and drums next time.

Some have used z36 powerstop pads/rotors, trd pads and stop tech rotors or something from autobrakesolutions.com
