Howdy all. I'm still alive.. just still sourcing parts for my engine.. Paychecks have been abysmal as of late so its just slow going (gotta love book-time).. Should have the other cylinder head soon... Then its pistons and out to the machine shop.. Building a 3.4 is a financial drain for sure. lol

Also still haven't gotten much further than seeing if the cams fit.. No mods were needed to bolt them in, I think all i mentioned was the cam is notched for a distributor but that doesn't mean you need one, just leave the full moon cam seal on the head

P.S. let me know how the cams go. I know they'll fit. its the timing I'm curious about. i grabbed the crank and cam gears from the Camry in case it needs those... the 5vz gears might work though.. I haven't investigated very far because the old engine is in a million pieces.. Contemplating getting a junkyard 3.4 to toy with...

If I remember correctly back in the early 2000s there was a post made on custom tacos stating the factory crankshaft can't handle much more that 6k rpm before it fails.. might be a issue to consider before throwing rpms at your engine. Also I'm pretty sure stock valve springs would produce float at the rpm those cams allow.. I'd consider a full valve job with new springs and maybe convert to shim-less buckets if you honestly want to go through with it. Crank too...

I'm not raising the redline, I'm just making the engine more efficient past 4800rpm were everything drops off, or atleast that's what I'm assuming will happen. I'm also curious to see what it will do to a dyno chart :D
It will probably be a couple of months before I get them, since a friend who parts out engines is keeping is eye out for a 3vzfe to pull them from. But that's ok, it gives me enough time to tune and get a before cams dyno run and then an after cams run.

Dispel the rumors and show forth the data. That will be one of the most significant dynos for a 5vz.

dont think ive seen a cam swap dyno on one of these yet. Id like to see what happens to the power curve.

Exactly. It is 2017, and not one. Still a myth to the masses.

If springs are of the same tension and height between the two engines, then it'd be a direct drop in. Minus setting up the lash.

If it alters the mid range down a little, but has an overall flatter curve, then it will still be more worth it, as the turbo will complement the whole powerband.

Exactly what I was thinking, if it can just pick up some more top end it'll be alot flatter overall, of course I don't know what mine looks like yet so I can't say where it'll improve but i'd assume it would dip in the same spots as the S/C and NA charts

Out of all my crazy ideas. Not once did I think to just keep factory redline but swap those cams in. Now you have me thinking.

Why do you need more top end? Are you going to race this thing or something? For just driving around it seems like a waste money since you won't be up in that rpm unless your wot.

I don't really need more top end, atleast not right now. And hey we may discover something worthwhile with this cam swap. I'm also doing this for the information, since people ask all about "3VZ-FE cams in a 5VZFE" but no one has actually (on record) driven a 5vz-fe with them installed. Also wouldn't it be great if they were better for a turbo charged application than stock cams? Of course no one knows yet how they'll do so in a few months I may eat my words, but we'll see.

Yes. Hopefully into the 12's on slicks. I'd like to get 14.5-13.7-9 on the all terrains, but that probably wont happen without the true trac.

Also Wouldn't all the rock crawlers and offroaders with S/C's benefit from 3vz-fe cams in theory, since, again, in theory they would raise top end power? And off road guys are usually in a low gear with high revs? Idk I dont offroad so idk how much itd actually help.

I need to start thinking about getting some cams made for mine soon... with dual valvesprings and stainless valves :anonymous:

@Clay_916 I read that hotrod article, and from what I gathered zero to very little overlap on the cams is desirable? That makes sense as the pressure from the compressor would just shove the intake charge out the exhaust. I'm thinking any gains from the cams will be mild at best simply because they are still stock toyota cams.

I personally am expecting them to either bring power from 4800 up a bit higher in a plateau fashion or possibly allow power to continue past 4800. Either way it would be better for top end and drag racing.

Oh yeah and I got those plugs in today or yesterday since it's 2:42am atm. What gap did you settle with?

Those are some reassuring numbers. I vaguely recall him saying his motor blew shortly after but I couldn't find the post on TW and didn't feel like checking the web. Maybe I'm thinking of another person. " 19 psi made 432 whp 555 wtq", this dude is insane. Pretty sure he said it's a .50 a/r, 50 mm Chinese turbo, dafuq. Oh yeah and did I mention it's a completely stock engine with some sketchy fuel adders and an fmu?

Also an old for sale thread of a forged 5vz:

    "Level 1: 14psi 362.66 hp 471.52 tq

    Level 2: 18psi 410.30 hp 513.35 tq

    Level 3: 24psi 472.22 hp 599.18 tq"
