A truck like the OP suggested is exactly what our economy needs. Everyone can afford them. They would have a Huge aftermarket following. (jeep wrangler) If someone wants all the electronics and leather seats, etc. Then they can buy a Tacoma, 4runner, Tundra, Etc.

In a heartbeat. We had a hilux that rollod over an antipersonnel mine in the 'ghan. It blew the battery out, shredded the drivers front tire, and most of the glass in teh vehicle, and everyone walked away fine. Theyre tanks. Also, you cant mess with a vehicle that drove to the north adn south pole.

    It will Never happen

Too many people buying trucks that should have bought a car and that ends up making a lose/lose situation for both the guy that needed a truck and the guy that really should have bought a car because of all the compromises that took place.

Amen brother. Tis the truth. Looking at a lot of other threads on RockSolidToys.com, Pirates 4X4, etc., sure stokes the fires for someday doing the SAS on my 2009. Or finding an old truck to do it on so using it for wheeling won't matter if it gets turned over or scratched all to hell. Still how awesome would it be if toyota would make a hilux or similar for here in the states with a solid front axle and a really basic, solid truck? I'll bet they would sell a bunch of those trucks.

Here is the deal. I would be interested in something like that, BUT I wouldn't want to buy it new. If I am going to build a trail truck then that is what I want to do.

I am talking chopping the bed off, exo cage, rockwells front and rear, V-8 power, four ink suspension, etc..... I doubt if Toyota would build something like that for the small percent of the population who would want something like that.

A total trail rig would not sell in any numbers great enough to validate marketing the vehicle. The vehicle suggested would be a simple, reliable truck without frills and useless luxury crap that is not necessary on a truck. It would be extremely reliable with a minimum of computer controlled stuff and built not to break. Does not mean it would be dedicated strictly for off-road use. If toyota tried to sell a hard-core crawler to the public it would be a failure because too few would buy it. This vehicle would have to be a daily driver and good for many hundreds of thousands of miles of use, like the old toyota trucks would do.

Yes to the smaller size, simpler mechanicals/straight axle, zero plastic body cladding, rubber floor, etc. No to the 4-cylinder. Small engines are okay for low-speed rock-crawling, but frustrating for everything else (daily driving, mudding, hill-climbing, towing).

I still have my 86 toyota truck that I bought new(I was 5;)) I love this truck! I can give it a complete tune-up and it feels new(love the 22R), even with 335,000 on it. I paid around $5,500 for it which seemed like alot of money at the time, it came barebone, no radio, no floor mats, not even a right side mirror, the only thing I added before I left the dealership was a bumper. I bought a fairly basic 09 DC 4X4, boy how basic has changed!

This might be just the ticket. Keep an open mind. Simple. Rugged. Reliable. Field tested in a third world country with far worse roads/conditions than our own. Check out the specs and wait for the reports to come in...

The first vehicle I ever owned (obviously) was my '84 Hilux.

I treated it like crap (I didn't have money to do otherwise) and in return it never let me down.

I would probably not own a Tacoma today if not for my respect for that little truck.

People who have owned one will tell you- They always start, they are up to anything you throw at them and they always get you home.

I had a 1977 Hilux that finally rusted to pieces.
A high quality small plain jane regular cab 4x4 diesel with a/c and power steering is what I want but there is a very small market for that vehicle so it ain't gonna happen.

A dedicated jeep killer would be nice = small size, light weight, crawling ratios, tight turning radius, factory-engineered extreme-articulation, reliable, tough, and a Toyota with traditional values. Not sure it would appeal to enough Americans to justify US production, unless money stays tight, so economical toughness is more important than looks and comfort.

I think toyota will not see that there is a market for a truck built like they used to make 'em. I finally ordered a ford f250 with a 6.7 litre turbodiesel ( 400 hp and 800 ft/lbs torque) and a solid front axle 4wd. Obviously that is not a small truck but since toyota is not going to make a truck that I want I abandon toyota. My current taco (2009 access cab) is running great but is gutless. It gets abysmal gas mileage for being a small truck. It has IFS and I want a solid front axle.

If toyota will make a small truck (like original hilux) with a diesel and solid front axle 4wd with a 6-spd manual transmission and locking front / rear differentials, no carpet, everything manual, with air conditioner, then I will buy one. Until then gone to my new truck.

If you want a big truck buy one of the many gas eater they have on the market these days.. Man it seams like the trucks these days are getting bigger and bigger and every ones bitchen about the gas prices these days haha. I for one would never trade in my 01 for any of the 2ed gens but I would love to have one they are grate trucks but i dont have a family of my own so for now i love the better millage and the comfort of nowing theres every little i cant do with mine except take big ass trailers but im not driving with a trailer everyday.. So hands down the light duty pick ups are better then cars for what you can do with it and at some points better then the bigg ass trucks these days.. but im happy how the 2ed gens are turning out just wish they can have some smaller models come out ha god for bid if i have to go with a ranger cant sand them trucks fill like im driving a box. There is nothing sexy about them except when there prerunners but thats besides the point.
BUTTT iv never had a 2ed gen so this is all me guessing and not hard facts just love my truck (08
