Ha! That's just fraud on both ends. The dealer benefits because they charge corporate for the work and the owner benefits from the "free" repair.

"Someone told me to do it, it can't be wrong".

OP...did you do the work? At any point do you remember one of the CV joints being pulled enough to significantly stretch the boot as you disassembled or reassembled the suspension? When a CV joint hyper extends like that sometimes it all goes back together and someone it doesn't.

I hyper extended an inner joint on a Sienna I was working on while replacing the LCAs. I saw it stretch and wiggle it back in place...or so I thought. Buttoned it all up and made it 25 feet before the joint scattered.

Point being. Perhaps you made it 10 days because it wasn’t until you engaged 4WD and placed a load on the joint that it grenaded. Just a thought

    This is true.

But how many here lecturing it's wrong wouldn't do it anyways? When it could be $1000s in repairs.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority in this thread would rather say fuck you to a big corporation and get them to fix it for free through fraud than pay the bill themselves.

It's only wrong if you get caught ;)

I don't know any dealer that would do that though and I'd sooner just bring it to my shop and pay for the fix than waste time

It’s not fraud, it’s recommended by Toyota to allow the consumer to utilize their warranty privileges. I have a family member who works for corporate on the executive level who told me that as long as the truck is brought in for warranty service in its original state any warranty item cannot be denied regardless of whether the vehicle was previously modified or not. If it’s brought in bone stock, they can’t say “well it’s modified” because that puts them in a legal bind. This is how it’s been with every car manufacturer warranty since the invention of the warranty. It’s not fraud when it’s standard practice in the industry.

Sure there are some complete ass hats at dealerships that won’t help you, but that’s why you have to freedom to go to another dealer.

I'd say it's still fraud but it's more money for dealer to try and prove its fraud than just doing it.

Dealer wins, customer wins, corporation stays rich. Keyboard Warriors complain about how they're better than thou but would do the same thing if given the position to do so.

Fuckin people getting so worked up over this when op never said he was doing it. For fuck sakes there are bigger crimes being committed by governments and people are just turning a blind eye...
Who are we to judge if it's a worse crime than a homeless man stealing? We're all guilty of something.
How many look at their phones while driving? Go over the speed limit?
Where do we draw the line between right or wrong right?

Perspective. It doesn’t change what may be right or wrong, but sure as hell does wonders for where you put your focus.

This thread went side ways. But I’ll throw my two cents in.

If someone modifies a truck and causes a failure of a part then takes the parts back off to deceive the dealer/car manufacturers into thinking it was a manufactured problem.

    I’d say that is fraud.

Now if a part fails and it has nothing to do with any modification.

Then if you’re worried about rejection due to dealer/car manufacturers tendency to blame all problems on all mods then removing the mod doesn’t seem so fraudulent.

I’ll ask again, what if the dealer tells you they won’t touch it unless you return it to stock? Is that still fraud?

I’d say unless the dealer has permission from Toyota Corp who is paying for the work then yes, fraud on the part of the dealer.

If someone caused damage to their truck because they modified it and is trying to get Toyota to fix it then, in my book, yes.
