coil bind and shock bottom-out are common issues with spacer lifts that the stock suspension components were not meant to handle.

    Because of this ^

I doubt it. For this to be true, the coils would have to bind at or before the shock is fully compressed. I can't imagine that any engineer would cut it that close. If you really wanted to figure it out, you could measure the space between all the coils, with the shock extended, add them up and and compare that amount to the total length of exposed shock rod.

Regardless, the OP had a poor setup that is now rusted and broke.

You can hear coil bind, and it's not a good sound.

I could see coil bind happening with a spacer that is between the tophat and the coil. The OPs spacer is above the tophat.

Regardless, the OP had a poor setup that is now rusted and broke.

You are probably correct, but I will only say that the engineers at Bilstein and Toyota operate with a set of assumptions and where the spacer actually sits may change the geometry. They must assume the wheel travels some distance and is stopped hard by a limiter, which eventually translates into the free and block length of the spring, travel of the shock, etc.
    True dat.

problem is, you don't make it to the bump stop through the full cycle.

That's how I picture it. Seems like putting it between the top hat and coil bucket is worse than between the coil and top hat.

If you add a spacer above the top hat and a the proper spacer on the bump you are not changing anything but height and alignment. Travel is not affected.

Exactly, shock just folds over sideways.

@Painkiller7 You posted this in the wrong thread so I'll quote it here. To answer your question, you can replace just the CV boot, i've never done it myself. Apparently it's pretty messy but shouldn't be difficult. This thread should give you an idea https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-rebooting-a-tacoma-cv-axle.604695/

If your going to use a spacer, might as well add some of these too. Jack that thing up in the air.

So that's an angle of the dangle issue (e.g. the LCA is exerting force through a different moment with a spacer) or a result of the coil binding and finding what is the weakest part of the shock body?

Thanks for all the fast responses! The spacers were on the truck when I bought it, I just never got around to removing them. They will be removed when I put in some struts for sure.
The struts have been on my to do list for awhile, I was just trying to avoid sinking too much money into the truck since I plan on jumping ship in the near future and going back to a 3/4 ton.

Good call, and good luck with your Tacoma and the 3/4 Ton. Done with this, out.

...Guy has a spring perch rust out and out comes the internet offering advice at its finest. @Mully we get it, you don't like spacer lifts and you think they will all cause you to crash and kill a bus full of nuns but his spacer lift had nothing to do with the lower perch rusting out.

@JerzRob gets it and has the patience that I don't to type out what happens with spacers when the suspension cycles.
