A while back my Tacoma(2008 access cab v6 4x4) the drive shaft broke while I was on the highway. I got it onto a trailer by putting it in four low and driving it on the trailer. I got home and waited for my new driveshaft to get here, I put it in and now I can’t move forward or backwards in 4wd or in 2wd. It’s a manual and it stalls if I try to go forward or backwards. I need some help, any ideas help!

    Is your parking brake seized?

How could I check that? My e brake sounds like it disengages.

Jack the back wheels off the ground, disconnect drive shaft then try to turn tires by hand. If they don't move it's the brakes or the rear end. If drums are frozen sometimes you can hit them with a big hammer to break them loose. If the wheels move could be the transfer case or trans.

If it drove in 4L with no rear drive shaft, that means the transmission spins the transfer case and the transfer case spins the drive shafts.. It also means that if the truck drove in 4L with no rear driveshaft, that the rear drums aren't seized.

I'd leave the rear shaft on, put the transmission in Neutral, jack rear wheels off the ground and see if the drive shaft spins or you could spin the wheels. If you can't get the driveshaft or wheels to spin and it isn't the parking brake, could be the rear differential. You could go through the process to drain the rear differential oil and see if you any metal chunks in the oil.

I’m thinking rear diff. Driveshafts don’t just break. Something like rear diff locking up would put a jolt on the driveshaft and could break it. Ordinarily I’d doubt the rear diff since it rolled onto the trailer but the torque of 4LO probably helped with that.

    I’d investigate the rear diff.

Just for reference I was able to get my 1st gen tundra on a car hauler in 4hi with the rear axel completely seized. Exploded my rear diff off-road would be an understatement. Did not break a unjoint or throw the drive line however. Did crack the pumpkin in half and completely lost every tooth off of the ring and pinion gear though.

Yeah, i mean they can break in a million different ways. I just mostly meant that he’s now having trouble driving, and it seems to reason that the rear diff could be the reason for that (as in locked up), but then it kinda defies the logic of still being able to freewheel it under its own power onto a trailer. Who knows honestly, but I have a feeling it’s the diff.

I agree with ya. Just pointing out that I was able to limp onto the trailer under its own power with the rear diff seized. So I think you are onto something.

what would happen if the new shaft was just a bit to long, could it be acting as a wedge against the TC?

I doubt it. If the drive shaft bolted up, the tcase should be able to spin it. There isn't anything in the tcase to compress. Also there is the slip joint in the rear shaft so the length of the shaft isn't constant.

Just curious, did you get a complete oem driveshaft from a dealership or what?

I assume it doesn’t move (roll) in Neutral or with the clutch pressed in?
