1997 white tacoma

The 4 wheel drive on my automatic 3.0 4runner has been broken for a while and since summers coming up i want to ramble it so figured i should try to fix it. When i try to shift into to 4hi or low there is a clicking noise but then no 4x4 light and it doesn’t engage. one time after messing around with shifting it the light started turning on and off rapidly while driving a half hour later. any suggestions on what it could be? Thanks
