Where is the "is it surface rust? Yes or no" option on your poll?

Things break, especially in the NE, replace it and move on. I had broken leafs in the back and 2/4 busted shocks from rust and wear on a Tacoma I got from the NE. Replace it and move on.

That spring has been broke a while for there to be that amount of rust in the broke area. If that was recent, then you should see clean steel with maybe some minor rust where the crack originated.

Rust is a factor. Looking at the picture, you have rust scale coming off in chunks.

    yes it is

The rust inside the break looks worse due to the jagged surface of the metal. The rust on the springs is purely surface rust, but the shit has been broken for several months and is eating the stuff inside the break.

Agree with original poster... Looks to me like a stress fracture caused by the end of the spring creating a stress riser where it's not tapered, then the rust came after. That bare uncoated metal on the inside of the coil can rust quick.

My dad's tacoma with TRD had almost the exact same failure, sure a little surface rust but you can see the metal on the inside of the stress fracture is clean. Look at any spring on any old car, it will have surface rust (esp if you live in Michigan). That's absolutely no excuse for a spring failure! And this 60k truck has barely seen a pebble. Bad design.

I had one break, too. It happens. This Emu only had 10k and no wheeling before it broke.

For a 600lb spring? I have my old ones for sale. They have about 15,000 miles on them. I upgraded to 650lb ones. $50 plus shipping if you want.

Since I need to replace my aging shocks and was debating on sticking with old springs or getting fresh new ones, now I gave to pay attention to the design and look for a nice taper

I have my old 600lb springs that will fit into the ro suspension since it is the same shock. I upgraded to the 650 lb springs at 15000 miles. A this point, I am willing to donate them if you need them, just pay it forward.

Fox's or TRD Pro Bilsteins? If they are the Bilstein ones, I have my 600lb ones from my 6112's (exact same spring) that you can have for free. All you would need to pay is shipping. They have 15k one them
