So I’m trying to set the timing and I’m having quite the issue. I get my cam sprockets all lined up but when I install the idler pulley it puts too much tension on the driver side cams and pulls them out of timing… any recommendations?

Did you take tension off the tensioners before installation? Meaning, I made sure all was aligned and everything was installed before I released tension back on the chain.

There is tension on the small cam chains but not the main. Should I take the tension off of those too when installing the main one?

Hmmm. I don't recall having an issue. I just remember making sure that the idler pulley was centered on the main chain before installing the bolt that holds it.

I can’t get it right for the life of me. I set the timing on the cams but every time I screw in the idler it just sets it off barely

Sounds like you need to start with it off a little so that when you release it, it pulls it into alignment.

    Yeah.
This guy does the idler and cam sprockets first, then does the crankshaft. He does it with the guides/tensioners off to give enough chain slack.

Yeah I’ve been watching that video. I don’t have a goddamn gear puller so I can’t get my crank sprocket off right now unfortunately

Are you following the steps in the FSM for installing the chain? Btw, I didn't replace or remove the camshaft sprocket. I only removed the idler gear when I did my head gaskets.

I’m on my way to the auto parts store to pick up a gear puller. Hopefully that helps

You don't need to remove the sprocket to install the chain.

I know I prefer not to but doing it this way obviously isn’t working for me.

Maybe I missed something earlier, were you able to replace the key(s) on the crankshaft? I thought that was the main reason why you removed the cover.

Yes I was able to remove the key. I am also doing new timing component while I’m in here. The issue I’m having is whenever I tighten the idler sprocket and it sets into place it pulls on one side of the cams and sets them slightly off.
