Broken crankshaft key leads to tear down and timing service

You are justified in being very careful, not a job you want to get wrong and have to do over again. Triple-check everything.

Get those guides/tensioners back on and button 'er up.

I’m gonna take the pin out of tensioner and prepare to button her up next chance I get to work on it. Here’s the final check

 

Also does anyone know torque spec for this tube on the inside of the timing cover. I have new o rings for it but when I take off the bolts holding it it’s like stuck on there or something and idk if I feel like prying at it or anything. Might just leave it… anyone know what those o rings purpose are? I feel like it’s keeping oil from getting into other oil lol

 

80 INCH pounds. not foot pounds. That's like 6.66 lb/f.

That tube sends oil from the oil pump to the oil filter and the rest of your engine. It's like the engine's aorta. Kinda important, lol.

 

Did you spin it over by hand?

 

I have not yet I’ll make sure to do that before I put the cover on

I don’t think I ever posted this but here is a comparison of the old and new key and how much of the key actually holds onto the harmonic balancer. This $6 piece of metal caused this entire tear down

 

Somebody in the past went in there to do something, removed the balancer and didn't tighten it back on properly. That's what caused the teardown.

When properly installed (like at the factory) it's torqued in such a way that there isn't any stress on the key. It's the tightness of the big crankshaft bolt that keeps everything from moving

 

Im just glad it didn’t mess with the crank at all
