Good to know. So smear it with your finger on the pan and apply a bead on everywhere else?

Just make sure when you smear it, that you don't smear it too thin.

You're probably going to be wiggling that timing cover around quite a bit while trying to align the oil pump gear, onto the crank. When that time comes, I like to have it so that the crank is turned to make the square surfaces of the cranks timing gear, parallel to the ground. Then match the oil pump in the timing cover.

Some times it can be a struggle. I also like to remove the two studs at the bottom of the block.

Due to all of that movement, I like to smear it all. A thick smear. Use you head if you aren't used to smearing the silicone. You've made it this far though, so I have faith in you.

I’m for sure going to try a dry run first just to get a sense of it. I know the fsm has you put the oil pan on a while after doing the timing cover cause it’s assuming you’re doing a full reassembly. Is it reccomended to not put the silicone gasket on the bottom of the timing cover where it meets the pan and to do it directly on the pan instead?

You could do either or both. You have to keep in mind not to do too much though, because you don't want a lot of excess that could come off, and clog something.

Is the gunk on the inside of the cover worth getting fully off? I’ve scraped a good majority of it already but it’s still on there

I sprayed mine down with brake cleaner and called it a day. Yours has a bit more build up than mine did though.

Edit: I meant parts cleaner. Probably similar to brake clean though.

Yeah and that picture I took is after I already scraped a bunch off. I’m just wondering if it’s bad to leave. I figure if it’s that stuck on there too much won’t come off and clog anything. Will probably do another oil change pretty soon after this job just to get any debris out

There will be "tight" and "loose" spots as each cylinder comes up to TDC. Once the engine is running, oil pressure will show up behind that main tensioner and keep it more firm against the chain

Normal. Btw, are you replacing the o-ring on the engine block just above and to the right of the idler gear? That o-ring is for the oiling system right behind the oil cooler.

I can see why you guys said it’s annoying putting the cover back on. I’m doing a dry run and it’s so hard to get the oil pump around the crank as well as keeping that o ring from falling

I completely fucked myself doing a dry run with the timing cover and tore that o ring. I can either use the old one that’s still intact or wait till Monday or Tuesday probably to get a new one from Toyota

Orrrr I just go to the store and get one of those o ring assortment kits

Take a breath. You'll get it next time. Others have reused the original but I personally wouldn’t do it.

My suggestions. Next time on the dry run, do a couple without the o-ring. I personally found the removing the two lower studs didn’t make it easier for me. With the two studs in place, keep presssure upward on the cover while sliding it in place as to avoid dragging the o-ring. I prefer the grease to hold the o-ring and also to allow the ring to slide across the top of the oil pan.

If you look at my pics, you can see I have FIPG on the rear of the oil pan as well as on the bottom of the cover. I think this aligns with what Torspd suggested too. The FIPG on the pan tries to create a seal on the inside while the FIPG on the cover tries to create a seal on the front edge.

Yeah I tried some Vaseline and it held it fine. It got caught on the damn bracket for the ac compressor line and tore it. What are your guys opinions on the o ring assortments from harbor freight or advanced auto parts? I was hoping to be able to put the cover on tomorrow because it’s my day off…
