Seems the accident of hitting a pothole would fall under an insurance claim instead of a warranty claim. After you get the damage evaluated by the dealership, call your insurance company to pay for the fix minus deductible.

That's what insurance is for, accidents, reckless behavior and negligence. You pay the premiums, use them.

I agree the op should look into his car insurance policy. Seems it should be covered under comprehensive or collision.
imo, it is not a warranty claim.

So, if I understand the basic premise here, I can spend $40K on a 3rd Gen and be absolved of any accident liabilty during the warranty period? Good to know.

Everyone is all upset at the OP but I truly understand... Times are hard sometimes. I once broke a joint after hitting a pothole too. I was pissed. It was my only joint. Didn't even get to light it. I should of asked my dealer to warranty it.

    Live and learn!

    A few things
I had a cv boot tear while my truck is under warranty. I had my icons a bit to high and got lazy about lowering them which caused my cv boot to wear a hole. Truck is under warranty but I had it fixed out of pocket by an independent mechanic. My fault not toyotas.

So, it was twenty years ago and on a completely different brand, but here's my similar tale: Back in 1991 I was driving my 1991 Jeep Wrangler YJ which had about 1,000 miles on it. I hit a pothole, bent the front passenger leaf spring, and took it to the dealer for advice. Granted, this was a small dealer in a small town and they were very nice. Service guy said he'd try to get it fixed under warranty. Chrysler declined saying that it was a road hazard or something. Service guy told me to call my auto insurance carrier. They paid for the fix and it didn't impact my rates because it was a road hazard issue.

Now, for the trolls, I'm sure it worked differently for you and/or your insurance company wouldn't be as nice, but there's my story. Kinda sad that we have to preempt the trolls (aka "total dicks").

Effin' wimp, pot holes? Try driving Hwy 1 down Baja, all 2,000 miles of it. Changes from year to year.

makes me laugh my ass off every time someone expects the warranty from toyota to fix the shit they broke, and can only imagine what toyota would tell them if they really could speak their minds...Reminds me of this pic:

Haven't read the whole thread so don't know if the OP has figured this out yet but hitting a pothole is no different than hitting another car, a telephone pole, or a spaceship parked in the road. All are Collision claims and your collision coverage will pay. Minus your deductible, of course.

If you can talk the dealership into handling under warranty, good for you, but certainly don't expect it.

God this was a great read... I just lost 20 minutes of work because of this. Now I am just as bad as the OP... guess I am working late today :)

OP, I don't think you can get it warrantied but you might be able to get the city to pay for it. My mother and law blew a tire on a pot hole the city paid for the replacement. Now, it helped that she called for road side assistance and had her case documented, but its worth a try.

If the city refuses, usually filling a civil case against them siting the pot holes will convince them. They will much rather settle out of court than waist time/money in a court battle. It will also motivate the city to actually fix the damn roads.

The city probably put up signs specifically to avoid doing that.

Yeah, that won't help OP's argument... Still if he threatens a civil suit and claims the holes were so significant that the road should have been repaired a long time ago or closed or something to that effect, the city will most likely just settle it and at least cover a portion.

Jesus Christ people. Dude hit a fucking pothole on his own accord. Why sue the city, why try to get shit warrantied? Fix the result of your your own actions and move the hell on OP. @Firstaco 07

Because you pay the city to maintain the roads. And if you don't pay your taxes or are late, they fuck you. That's why.

I guess I should sue the county for not having the white line repainted so I could see it and avoid running off the road and totaling my shit then. Totally their fault.
