does anyone here know the part number(s) I need to replace this broken driveshaft. I believe it’s a u-joint but not 100% sure. It’s a 2005 TRD Tacoma 4x4, v6, 6 spd, extended cab. I had some vibration and I was planning to get it fixed in a few days but it snapped on me last night before I had the chance to take it in.

You lost the yoke when the U-joint gave way.

You need a new flange yoke and u-joint. You might as well replace the other u-joints and your carrier bearing while you're down there. Make sure you inspect the surrounding components to make sure they weren't damaged when the drive shaft broke loose.

If you need to drive the truck around to get parts put your truck in 4-hi and remove the rear drive shaft and enjoy your FWD Tacoma.

I can't see what others are that would indicate the yoke is no good. This isn't a factory brand joint but one that would work there. Dana/Spicer joint I believe is what factory joints are.20211107_120316.jpg

I guess upon further examination that I can see where a piece of that yoke is chipped out. If so then it would need replaced. Would I be afraid of slapping a new u-joint in there and rolling with it until I got a new one? Nope.

If it were me, I’d drop it off at a driveshaft shop and have them rebuild it. Grease the front drive shaft u joints. If you need to drive the truck while the driveshaft is being rebuilt, run it in 4wd with just the front.

Is there risk of damaging anything driving it in 4H with the front drive axle for a few days while I find a part?

Awesome. Is it necessary to cover the opening where the driveshaft is disconnected, and if so, what’s the best way to do it?

I don’t recall if the driveshaft bolts on in the front or if it’s a slip joint. If it’s a slip yoke a foam cup wedged and taped will keep the fluid in.

2wd uses a slip. 4x4 should be bolted onto a flange

I would not advise driving a 4wd vehicle like that unless you had to drive it to the end of a trail to an awaiting tow truck. 4wd is for low traction situations.

Bolted flange on the TC case, you’re definitely fine to drive it a few days with just the front driveshaft in 4wd. Just don’t do a burn out.

Yes it's bolted. I unbolted the whole propeller shaft but I'm having a hard time finding parts. Doesn't seem to be anything locally available, and anything I find online doesn't ship to Canada. I haven't tried the stealership yet though

Easiest way to fix /repair the damage Is to have a driveline repair shop build a new driveshaft

With no rear ended attached the front won’t bind. It’s not a bad thing to do.
