Hey all, it finally happened. I took the bed off of the truck to try and repair the frame rot, and sure enough, it folded in half. What are my options from here? I’ll attach some photos for reference. I would appreciate any and all experiences you’ve had, advice, etc. TIA

    You really have two choices.

Chop it and sell the parts, or buy a frame and have a project.

But, thank goodness it folded in the garage and not on the freeway. Good luck.

You need a replacement frame which are not easy to come by.

You can disassemble what good parts are left and sell them, or save them if you want to replace it with a similar model

    On a collapsed frame?

What would they be welded too? Cause you know there isn't much solid around there....

I actually Have good metal on either side of where it broke. Need to replace a cross member and the spare tire holder (of course) but the rest of the frame is pretty solid.

Without seeing pics, it most likely broke where every single first gen breaks. Right in front of the spring hanger. They develop a crack running from bottom to top, leading to the bed pushing against the cab. If you pull the bed off, well, gravity will do the rest…

That’s exactly where it broke. So sad to see Toyota make a bulletproof engine and muck the frame up…

Give the frame a nice thorough inspection, especially at the other low points where salt and water get trapped. If all checks out then just safe-t-cap new spring hanger sections on. I recommend while you have it cut up trying to inspect the inside of the frame rails and even clean them out with a chain on a drill attachment (drain pipe cleaner), then decrease, rinse, hit with ospho, then RELIGIOUSLY woolwax annually. Probably will last another 20 years.

You could also take the opportunity to turn your DCSB into a DCLB. Take an Xtracab frame and attach it after extending the straight section under the cab.

Do you have a custom hot rod shop or off-road shop around that could fabricate something?

My father-in-law is a CWI of 30 years and I’ve asked him to help me. I’ve ordered the TAC-156 SAF-T-CAPS hoping to straighten the frame out, cut out rust, weld new metal in and then saf-t-caps around that. Then coat inside and outside of frame and put a new spare tire crossmember in. In theory it should work if I get a framework shop to take a look at it, right?

I have no idea. I just thought a hot rod shop that builds custom frames or a fabrication shop that builds rear cages for long travel would have some ideas.

If it's not safe you'll need a whole new frame or a new vehicle.
