Broken front diff 2018

Did the same thing on a Ford Raptor at work in 4lo, it happens when you go balls out in 4lo

 

Why would you tell them the truth
You should have told them you just got stuck on a main road in 2 wheel drive, then switched to 4 low and it just broke.

 

Seriously, never tell the truth and take as much back to stock as possible. Never fails! Lol.

Also, this would be the best excuse for the wife as to why I need to SAS

We broke and axle on a snow cat it was an 1 1/2 this 7,000# thing steers by locking the opsite axle to stop the track. The final drive doesn't get much lower, 10 MPH WOT at 3 grand. So how did we break it? It was sitting in a field in maybe 3-4" of water from early winter rains yep it was frozen fast to the ground. This I can understand, breaking a Toyota axle and trashing an extension housing I have a hard time understanding.

 

Toyota this Toyota that jeep has replaced for axle shafts on my Rubicon under warranty my Dodge power wagon I run that thing around in mud holes rocks snow 4low wide open spinning I trade all my vehicles in every 25,000 miles and never had a power wagon break my 98 Tacoma has 200,000 miles on it and that things been beat on and used as ranch truck for 100,000 miles never busted an axle and had it in the same scenario hundreds of times I even let the help use it. bottom line is this new Toyota stuff is shit

Commas my friend... It was difficult to understand. What I gathered was that you trade all vehicles under 25,000 mi and you have blown axles in jeeps under 25k as well this quickly? There may be common denominator

 

In OPs second post he says the diff exploded while backing out. Likely CV went boom when wheel spin went from really fast to zero, then when backing out the broken CV bound up the front diff and the cast iron housing provided less resistance than the hardened steel axle.

 

The way that axle broke it's in a spiral. If you were to try and spin it in reverse it would cam out against itself. So looks to me like the axle pushed out against the diff and the diff case just isn't designed to hold that force in.

Kinda weird HOW it broke though, looks like a totally brittle fracture. OP have any closeups?

 

Toyota IFS is junk,they are a weak point and not intended for hard use..

 

Brittle fracture looks more likely, hot temp on the front diff dropping into ice cold snow, I think that would cause a brittle fracture for sure. Expansion and contraction can be a bitch.

 

It's steel, not glass. Steel will fail 100% brittle if it's overstressed at a subzero temperature, or if there is some manufacturing defect in the material itself.

It's extremely unlikely something of this shape would crack when splashed with ice or water. Anyways the snow would have touched the diff case, not the axle shaft...

 

My dealer told me the OR and Pro are covered for off road accidents, because they know thats why you bought the upper 2 models. The mall crawler sport with paint matched everything is a different story. According to Jones Junction in Maryland, anyway...

 

Sounds like your dealer tried to sell you an offroad or a pro.

 

What's wrong with being hard on the gas in 4 low?? What's the difference?? It's just a "higher" gear ratio lower speed etc etc. Oh wait, THE TORQUE!!

What did the OP say that made people feel like he was a "whiny little bitch"?? Toyota is and has always been a stickler as far as what is warranted. If they find and scrape/scuffs and/or mud underneath, they usually deny the claim and once it's in the computer, every dealer can read that...

It is always a priority that a dealer finds a way to deny your claim, just how it is.

I've had 3 Yota's in my years keeping each about 10 - 17 years. The 88 and the 94 were treated like a red headed virgin stepchild at an incest campground. That 88 4 banger with 33" BFG AT's out climbed and outperformed EVERY truck I ran into. The only truck that did more than I could do was my buddies FJ cruiser with 31" BFG. Regardless, I lost 2 rear diffs, both had a plugged vent, they lost fluid, noise started and soon afterwards I blew the 3rd diff itself.

As for the front end, well, 1 time I jumped so far that the left A arm snapped on the frame and I had to put it on a frame machine, pull it back out and re-weld it. The day it was done, we went back to the same jump and now I snapped all 4 cab mounts thru the floor. They 3" body blocks were visible in the cab, lol. One night I blew the rear diff that was leaking, I stuffed it in 4 low and headed home. For the next 17 miles, I was laying down burnouts from the front end every 1/4 mile - with 33" tires. After 10 times of this WOT abuse, I finally had another failure; This time the CV joint came right out of the front diff housing. That little retaining clip is all that holds it in, so it popped out. I bought a new clip, popped it back in and a used rear axle fixed me up. We went right back to the same place and beat the shit out of it some more. I didn't even break a CV joint or the R + P themselves.

I can guarantee you guys one thing, myself and my band of squids beat our NEW 88 Toyotas like 90% of you all have ever seen with the benefit of YouTube. We always drew a crowd, and the 2 88 Toyotas ALWAYS came out on top while the other guys blew axles, 2nd gear or transfer cases. I limped that truck for 17 years and 200K miles, Those were the days!!

Anyhow, why the book? Who cares or GAF about my stories? I don't have pictures to prove it!! I guess what I am trying to convey, is that I have always beat the ever living hell/snot out of my Toyota's in 4 LOW, 4 HIGH or anything in between, crawling or WOT bouncing off the rev limiter. I have out climbed big block Fords with 44" Super Swampers on there.

Now i have an 03 V6 Taco, and I need it for a DD so the fun is long over, I'm also not 17 y.o. anymore now

If he's got stock tires, that should not have failed or am I just speaking of my experiences back when the steel we had was much better than today? Is that it? Or is this about the metallurgy itself?

Did you ask them then what is considered normal driving conditions when needing the 4wd to operate under?

Id be curious to see what kind of nonsense they are considering to be normal conditions for 4wd...

Better let the rest of the 4wd Customers know that driving in snow is not what 4wd is meant to be used for
