    Apples and oranges.

No one EVER said any of those have the same traction as snow, just that it IS possible to suddenly gain MORE traction while in snow.

Not claiming to be the ultimate/consummate authority on anything, but, I started off owning 4wds in 1973. Have logged thousands upon thousands of miles on and off road. Never been without a 4wd since day one. I've owned 18 different 4wds. (Including 5 Tacoma's a Tundra, and a FJ Cruiser) I've destroyed a few parts over the years. Some qualify as catastrophic failures. In EVERY case of major failure, it took abuse above and beyond "normal" to cause anything even close to what is pictured in this thread. Not just a big speed bump in the mall parking lot. Regardless of what happened, it is difficult to get a dealer to stand behind a product when there is a legitimate case for operator abuse.

I swear there was a thread a few months ago about a guy snapping his cv snow wheeling cause he was trying to power through a couple feet of drift. Same rookie mistake, same result.

Yep. I remember that thread and the lesson learned.

Not long after that, another Taco owner, a JKU, and I got stuck in some very wet snow on a FS road. I took it easy and worked my way out without hammering it. I definitely felt the wheels getting and loosing traction on the surface below.

While Tacoma's are a decent truck, they are NOT Abrams tanks. (Which BTW, ALSO break on occasion) Snow, mud, wet slick rocks, etc, combined with a heavy right foot will break parts. Even with experienced and qualified drivers things break. BTDT, got a scrap pile out behind the shop with all sorts of expensive shrapnel. Something to be considered before you take any truck off road in a hostile environment

Be glad it’s not, worst thing in the world is changing track! Then again cutting concertina wire off an axle is pretty bad too.

Spent 4 years in an artillery unit with M110A2 self propelled howitzers. Slipped a few tracks on them too!

I was a combat engineer. My first three years were heavy (M113) and the tracks sucked! Otherwise we just put in the wire and mines and watched the chaos unfold!

Really wish the OP would give the full story on what all was said by Toyota. Also if it was actually JUST 18” of snow for 15’. Still think we are missing some important facts from the incident to Toyota’s reponse.

    Yeah.
Is there a section of the manual or warranty that explains what is and is not "normal" driving conditions? Sudden traction or not, driving in snow sounds normal, and hitting the gas to get through a tough spot sounds like a normal reaction. That damage seems pretty extreme, but without explicitly stating what is and is not normal, I find it hard to believe that Toyota wouldn't cover it. Driving on a snow-covered road to get to your cabin is quite a bit different than, say, mudding in an off-road park.

I think that’s the issue with all the speculation, seems like a lot of damage even considering WOT.

 Now you're just acting like a child. Typical, go ahead take your time trying to come up with another half-assed insult to get the last word in. Remember to breathe, don't want you getting too excited over it now.

It's possible for someone who currently lives in California to have lived somewhere else before or to live in a city over 8,000 in elevation. California actually has a very varied climate and people move all of the time but I suppose that everyone who currently lives in California has never even seen the stuff. OK...
