I recently got a check engine light so i checked the code and it was p0420 which is mostly associated with cat converts and o2 sensors, but i was checking unde my truck and it seems that where my tailpipe and muffler meet has corroded threw and is disconnected.
Would this trigger the p0420 code? An is there anyway to reconnect the muffler and tailpipe?
    Thanks guys

If you haven't already changed out the O2 sensor - it's probably time to do so and most likely 'bank 1 sensor 1'

Go to your local garage that makes custom exhaust. Ask them for a recommendation - they might be able to hook you up with an inexpensive muffler and repair the piping.

Buy an aftermarket cat-back exhaust system and install it yourself.

No...you can't use duct tape or weld it. The metal is already badly rusted. :p

Grey wire and keyless entry. I like stock.
Our trucks only have two sensors in the exhaust system. The bank 1 sensor 1 is your front air fuel ratio sensor. It is called an O2 sensor as well though it isn't just that so much. It actually reads your direct engine output exhaust before the catalytic converter does it thing to filter it. After the catalytic conv does its thing the exhaust flows down your pipes and out of the tailpipe. The second and actual O2 sensor is usually right after the cat or will be built directly into the cat. This is the one that directly identifies problems with the your converters output. If your converter is clogged it will block exhaust all the way back to the engine and kill your bank 1 sensor 1. Thus why exhaust system codes suck. They can apply to either sensor being bad or the conv being bad. Or it could just be one of the sensors took a dive and is making all the rest of the exhaust system look bad.

If our trucks had a dual pipe set up or even x pipes, the second pipe coming from your exhaust manifold would be the bank 2. Then its the same sensor configuration as the previous explanation. The front is bank 2 sensor 1. The rear bank 2 sensor 2.

It is the sensor before the first cat. Bank 1 stands for 1st cat and sensor one stands for the sensor before the cat

The exhaust system is one of those things you "should" fix right the first time. Beside the Carbon monoxide threat, any temp repair will just be that Temporary.

The Epoxy stuff is rally crap and only good to temp seal a minor hole for inspection.
If you want to do a 1/2 A$$ job - you could buy an short Male/Male connector and splice it in the pipes ( if you have enough pipe sticking out of the muffler) - but that will just add, maybe, weeks or months.

I'd decide if I'm going to keep the car and go from there ....

Ok so, ive been doing some research and it seems that for some reason my muffler and catalytic converter have no end bolt pieces where they connect, maybe the previous owner did some sawzalling/welding of his own, im not sure. My original plan was to get a new muffler and just attach it to the catalytic converter but I cant do that. So I was thinking of getting a new cat (150$) and bolting it to the cat above it, and then a new muffler ($116) and bolting that to the new cat. I can do this with Bosal parts

    http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=4796721&cc=1418453

That is the diagram Ive been looking at. Im basically wondering if this is a good idea, or if there is an easier way, I mean I could pay a mechanic to weld on a new muffler for probably the same price I can buy a new muffler and CAT and put it in myself. Any and all help or info is much appreciated thank you
