So I just recently found out my Prop shaft broke and needs to be replaced. Has anyone had this problem or knows of probable cause? What future damage might be caused as a result? This seems like an unlikely problem. I use my truck off-road but don't abuse it. All maintenance has been kept up.

    What broke?

Have you greased the universal joints on the shaft?

I'm guessing universal joint gave out due to lack of grease.

I am not sure exactly what broke. There was a clunking and shuddering as I drove. It's coming from inside where the shaft attaches to the rear diff. The dealer diagnosed it as a broken prop shaft needing replacement. Everything was greased and fluids changed 30,000 km ago. I am asking because it seems like an unlikely point for breakage I would have expected the joint or diff to fail first. I would have thought the shaft was tougher than that. Never had a single problem with my first Gen one and I was much harder on it.

There is nothing inside the propeller shaft. It is a hollow tube. I'm still calling it a broken universal joint.

So you greased the universal joints about 18,641 miles ago. How often were they greased before that? Did you do it or did someone else say they did it?

The dealer will sell you a new drive shaft for over 1000 dollars just for a simple universal joint that you could replace your self for less than 100 dollars. Or get a shop to replace all of them for less than a third of that price.

Ask the dealer questions, do not let them take advantage of you.
