I've seen a lot of broken diffs but I've never seen one with a chunk of the ring gear missing!

The diffs aren't fragile they are undersized for the truck. The 8" diff started its life out on the mini trucks that weighed 2500 lbs max with 28 or 30" tires. These newer trucks are over double that when loaded with gear and not to mention the larger tires in the range of 33-35+. Toyota never redesigned the rear of the trucks to match the new demands of them.

Toyota should have went with 9.5 rear end and e-locker from LC. but they went cheap. point is mute because now they went with non Toyota locker for 2016 Tacoma so it will only get worse...

Hey @Sigi what ratio you have (stock 3.73) ?

usually going to 4 + like 4.56 helps a lot. After last 10 years watching forum, I still think main problem is because 3.73 makes ring to thin for application in TRD OR. non TRD trucks have thicker 3.73. So diameter is the same but the thickness of metal supporting teethes is to small on e-locker diff.

From stock to 4:56 shouldn't be much of a difference in price.

Considering rear is already broken, and needs to be set it up, cost of the front is just an addition. More than likely not something bad since whole rear will cost pretty money considering after failure people have to replace all the bearings, ring & pinion as well as carrier itself.

 

This, and the fact that the horsepower and torque of a 4.0 are both over double what a 22R produced. 96HP, 129 ft-lbs in my '83, IIRC.
