:( He has dementia and he is already dying slowly of cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer in his left lung 3 weeks ago, but has been going down hill for awhile with his health. The nurses were given instructions that he wanders at night and because of his frail health already falls because when he wanders he doesn't get his walker. They told us the alarms were for that reason.

None of the nurses "heard" the alarm when he got out of bed. The shoulder is crushed and all we can do is wait and let it heal in the position it's in. And try as hard as we can to help him deal with the pain....

This afternoon I went to the hospital to see him off to surgery. It was suppose to start at 1pm. At 1:20 we are still standing in the surgery area waiting for him to go back. I saw the nurse run back up stairs come back down and then start writing real fast. So I walked over and asked what the hold up was. She said that "someone" forgot to fill out the reason for surgery but the doctor and mom had already signed the form and consent form. So everything had to be done again. Then they get him under and in the O.R. and do another exray and realize the bone is broken and crushed or pushed up into the joint. Like a crushed coke can. So they can't operate because he is to fragile for shoulder replacement.

I'm not really trusting them at this moment......

    Sorry about your grandpa Neon.

If he says he wants to go, I know it's hard on your mom, but she should respect his wishes. Been there, done that and yes, it sucks, but if he's in pain or just ready to go, your family should just tell him it's ok to go, and you will be ok.

(I've lost both my parents as well as my older sister)

My grandparents are in their late 80's and my grandma has said for years that she is ready to go, my grandpa just says he is just waiting till it is his turn. I'm glad they are both acknowledging they will be gone soon and they are enjoying the life they have left. It is going to be tough though. I'm sorry for your families pain and I wish the best for everyone.

:( Very sorry to hear this.

There's honest accidents and then there's negligence. if you really do believe they are negligent then i would definitely look into what you can do as far as legal action (i'm not saying sue their pants off but getting medical costs paid for by the hospital wouldn't be unreasonable) and i would also look into the logistics of having him moved to a nearby hospital with a better rep. i know there is at least one hospital around here that i would be transfered out of as soon as i figured out where i was

I'm so sorry to hear about your Grandfather, Neon. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts during this hard time. I truly believe that if he's not willing to fight anymore than they should make him as comfortable as possible.

Sorry to hear about your Grandpa. Like a couple other folks have said, when they start saying they're ready to go it usually means they're tired of being in pain and knowing that little by little their bodies are breaking down. Happened to my Dad last year. He was in a nursing home for awhile but finally passed away and is no longer suffering. It's hard on those of us left behind, but when you think about it, that's just us being kind of greedy and wanting them around whether they want to be or not. All you can do is visit him and comfort him as much as possible and let him know you love him. Prayers for you and your family as well as Grandpa.

Ask visa or my wife. They both constantly remind me how much I've got left to spend.
Neon, I just wanted to ask about what your family plans to do when your g'father discharges from the hospital. Check with social services there at the hospital and see what they're planning and if your grandfather is going to recieve any palliative care at home. This will basically be a nurse checking in on him 2/3 times a week to make sure he is comfortable and his med doses are enough which he will need a little something with the shoulder for pain. This is not hospice but you need to see what his dicharge plan is so your family can take the next step in providing care for your g'father. I just run into so many families that get to the end of their family members stay and when we call them about the discharge they haven't even thought about what is next because they have been so distraught by everything happening so fast.

He and my grandma both live in a nursing home. A whopping $6800 a month currently being paid by my parents. So everything is set with where they are living.

I am so fuckng upset right now, I cant even speak!!

He was tested for cancer a few weeks back...Today the Head Nurse told us that the cancer was benign, and he did not have cancer (which we already thought he did) so we got all happy and relieved about that issue. Told him , gramdma called family and everything.

1 hour later we get a call from another "head nurse" saying that we come back down and talk about the results. Cancer both lungs!

Wait.. :mad:I cant do this:mad:.... wifey will be here soon to give the update..

yesterday he was placed on a liquid food diet until the choking issue is taken care of...
She can tell you about them giving him chicken fucking fried steak for lunch

Soooo, as neon said, the nurse gave us false information. They called us back down and told us that yes he has cancer and that it was in both lungs. As mom and me are walking toward his room to speak with the nurse, another nurse stops us to tell us the news. But I had noticed that grandpa had nurses busy all around him and asked what was going on.

Mind you that morning they had told us that grandpa is having problems swollowing and is on a soft food such as soups and jello's until a gastrologist sees him to find out what the issue is and that will be sometime today.

So we walked into to Grandpa's room when the nurses come out and grandpa says that he threw up. I walk back out to the nurses station and ask the nurse what did grandpa throw up. She says just phlegm and junk from his chest. However, she looks nervous. I walk back into the room and tell grandpa it was just phlegm and he says no it was food. I look over to see the lunch tray still sitting on the side of his table and open the lid. Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, carrots and a roll.

As I walk back out of the room, the nurse knows why I am coming. I am not happy at all. All she can say to me is the cafeteria may not have gotten the proper instructions yet.

ONTOP of that, Grandpa was upset because he called the nurse in and asked for the urinal so he can go pee. The nurse came in and told him he had a diaper on just to pee in that. WTF!!!!! My grandpa said he asked again and was told she was busy at the moment. He said he pee's himself 3 times and the bed was wet before he finally got someone to come change him. I could tell how embarrassed he was. I felt so bad for him. :( Mind you the urinal is hanging on the edge of his bed that he can not reach because of the broken shoulder that they can not do surgery on because it is crushed.

It almost seems unreal how many stupid mistakes they are making. The problem is one of the mistakes alone..... probably could look past, maybe not the broken shoulder, but hey shit happens. But everyday there is a new "whoops". I just get get over it.
