Been doing some searching to no real avail. I've got a broken right-front spring on my 2017 TRD Pro. :(

Got quoted $2,318 for parts and $840 in labor to redo the fronts. Total of $3,158. Apparently can't just get a spring?

Does that sound like the going rate? Do I have any other options? I'm not looking for any lifts or anything fancy. I don't do any crazy offroading. Just a couple vacations a year that involve normal driving down some smooth-ish dirt roads. Also have to deal with the rubbish roads here in Mass.

How did you break a coil? Any other damage to the shock, perch, etc?

You have a couple simple options...
    1. Use this opportunity to upgrade to a new coilover. For example, Bilstein 5100's at the factory height
    2. Ask the TW community for OEM take-offs (cheap)
    3. Look on your local Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Offer Up, etc... for OEM take-offs (cheap)
Absolutely DO NOT pay that ridiculous dealership quote!

    Good luck!

Go into this thread and see if anyone kept their factory coils and will sell them to you. There should be a TON of them available. Make sure the coils are the same (flat ground vs full diameter ends)

No clue. Just found part of it in the driveway the other day. Saw some other part of it in the street a few months back, but that was on trash day so thought it was just that and didn't put 2 and 2 together at the time.

    Yup.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. "Flat Ground" I think is what I have where the lower coil goes from round at the bottom to a flat edge to sit on the shock. "Full diameter" I think I saw got introduced in 2020 where it is round all the way to the very end?

To answer your question, yes - that sounds like the going rate of a dealer job
The even better news, yes - you have plentyyyy different options to explore.

Name your price, and TW will get you whatever you want. If you want to spend 3k, we can get you some really nice replacement parts, 3x better than stock. If you don't want to spend a penny, I can guarantee someone around you locally has some stock take-offs they can't pay someone to come get, and would probably even help you install for some beer, steak, and a handshake.

Edit: I need to read better, you have a PRO. You won't be finding free takeoffs, but we can still help you find some alternatives for a fraction of that quoted price.

Unfortunately, this is not uncommon with the flat ground TRD Pro springs. The regional rep for my dealer even attempted to blame driver abuse when we warrantied one on my father's Pro 4-Runner.

You can use that as an excuse to upgrade to the trd pro Eiback spring upgrade, or get the pair from @hokiehunter19. Definitely replace the springs your self and get an alignment, not even close to a 3k job.

It would appear that is what they're trying to sell him. I would use my $ to upgrade at that point. This is the problem with non-serviceable items. Still annoyed they took the serviceable u-joints away!

I mean, I know the guys spring broke, he not the first from the east coast to have had that problem, but I don’t think going from a 2.5 rebuildable shocks w/ tuned valving down to a 2.0 $100 throw away shock is an “upgrade.”

Having had the TRD Pro suspension and having also ridden in a truck with 5100's, they're pretty darn comparable ride wise. Additionally, the Billies are adjustable, which is the biggest limitation of the Pro shocks. Lastly, calling the TRD Pro suspension "rebuildable" is a bit of a stretch. Yes, they "can" be rebuilt, but it's most likely more trouble than it's worth. I know there was a TW member offering rebuild services, but between the cost of the service, the shipping, and the modifications to the shock (adding a schrader valve), I think most people deemed it not worth it.

I'm glad you like your Pro suspension, but it's not by any means the best option at factory ride height.

ok, well I see where this is headed again…

Sure ok. Apparently people who want their cheap budget shocks to be “just as good as” are right. Apparently 5100s handle shock fade, and dampening in the same capacity as a 2.5… with that logic, the 6112 shouldn’t even exist. Because 5100s are “a upgrade.”

It’s not about what I like, it’s the fact that you basically told the OP this. 5100s are not in the same playing field as any 2.5. Regardless of your bias.

As far as the rebuild, I guess it just depends on the person. If you’re soo poor you can’t get it rebuilt, then you’re right, you shouldn’t be getting fox, kings or any other premium shock. Being a poor doesn’t mean that 5100s are a “upgrade.” It just means that you don’t want to do the maintenance.

"where this is headed again"? Have we ever spoken to each other before? Seems to me, you might be dragging some baggage into this conversation.

I did not tell OP anything about what shocks to get. I simply said, an example of a shock upgrade would be Bilstein 5100's. Bilstein 5100's are an upgrade over a broken Pro shock. In addition, the Bilsteins have some advantages that the Pro shocks don't. All OP was asking for was a OEM ride height shock that would work for mild off-roading.

"5100's not in the same playing field as any 2.5"... Please indicate where I said that...

I've had plenty of shock variations on my truck (OEM Bilsteins > TRD Pro > ADS 2.5 > King 2.5)... I can 100%, unequivocally tell you, the TRD Pro shocks are not that special. Would I replace a good Pro shock with a 5100... no. If I was on a budget, would I replace a broken Pro shock with a 5100... absolutely, yes.

Also, are we ignoring that I provided the OP with not only a suggestion of where to get a replacement coil for his current shock, but also linked him to a source of numerous TW members that would sell/give him one?... I'm pretty sure I haven't lead OP astray in any fashion and you're making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I assume that the coil itself can be purchased individually. If so, the minimum you could do would be to have the spring replaced. A reputable shop would do that for a couple maybe three hundred bucks, remove coilover, compress, disassemble, compress new spring, assemble, reinstall.

If it were me I’d replace both springs given that the vehicle is 5 years old.

End of story. Unless your Foxes themselves are in bad shape which is unlikely.

    Do not replace with 5100s.

Also — you could do the labor yourself, but have a shop do the spring swap. It’s not bad at all to remove and reinstall a coilover.

Parts.Toyota.com you can get new fronts and rears shipped during the sales they run for 2400. So I’d say no to their price. For that money you could get all new or change to a different setup.
