Took my truck for an oil change and tire rotation. The shop saw that the left driver side spring is broken. The shop owner said it’s not an immediate safety concern but this does not look good. I’m going to replace it (can’t put a price on safety) but what do you all think? 57FD36FE-93E8-47B1-B0A5-699265727999.jpg

Due to where it broke and you not knowing it was already broken, I'd say if you have to drive around, drive around - cautiously. Those are pretty rusted out though, definitely due to be replaced - probably the shocks as well.

It's probably not going to fail catastrophically right away, but as it's a critical suspension component I would try not to drive the truck too much and replace it ASAP.

I had an OME spring fail the same way.

Fuck. Looks like it broke in pretty much the same place as mine. I’m assuming you leveled out the front OME coils with an add a leaf pack in the back?

All solid advice, thanks. I actually need to drive down to DC for work (drove it up here). I’m assuming I probably shouldn’t do that

I say you should take it off some sweet jumps and see what happens.

    Not a safety concern?
You would fail a safety inspection for that.
It will drop that side and potentially throw off the alignment reducing steering traction if it’s in the front

I would replace the whole unit
That shock body looks beyond saving with that amount of rust

Man, I went in for an inspection sticker on Monday of this week and it passed. I had a feeling that the guy doing the inspection kinda sucked

Guys, I’m gonna replace the shocks (Bilstein 5100’s) and coils. I don’t want to risk driving 7+ hours down to DC. While I have you here, seems the popular opinion is to indeed get them replaced. I trust my mechanic (been going to him for 6+ years) but I think I’m gonna go against his better judgement on this.

seems that OME coils are the way to go. Or maybe I should get the Toytecs again. Thoughts?

    Yeah, get rid of those!

Shock surplus has the bilsteins back in stock, with springs installed. I just put a set of fox 2.0 on the front because they were out of the bilsteins when I was ready to order and so far they’ve been great.

awesome, good to know. What’s your ride height/comfort like with the 2.0’s?

You can go from stock up to 2” of lift, and I like the ride better than the stock TRD OR bilsteins I had on it. Maybe a little stiffer than the toytec/5100s I have on my 02. I like the threaded body on the Fox shocks, so you can dial in the ride height as you like.

If it makes you feel better, I drove from MS to NJ with the same broken spring on the driver’s side. Not saying I would recommend it, but I didn’t die.

In case anyone was wondering, ended up going with OME 887 coil overs. The ride is much better and maintained the same height.

That looks identical to mine 3 years old and around 20000km . I'm thinking the eibach\toytec springs are garbage.IMG_20220629_190612545.jpg
