My windshield got cracked yesterday by flying debris on my '09 Taco. My insurance company is linked to Safe Light. I see their adds on TV. Has anyone had any good or bad luck using them? I live in a small city and my options are limited.

My insurance company (USAA) has an online claim service with a special service just for auto glass. Their selection options are either "Safe Light" and "Other" so I assume Safe Light is their preferred vendor. Just three clicks and I have a replacement scheduled for tomorrow at no cost to me. I am hoping that USAA is a big enough account that they want to do a good job. This is my first windshield replacement in 51 years of driving and I am a bit anal about my truck. We shall see. Thanks for the reply.

Safe lite has a very bad reputation with installing windshields on Tacoma's,my brother had a MAJOR leak after his install, and had too fight too get his insurance too reinstall with a factory windshield and seal.Insurances use Safe Lite because they area cheap!

I'm with USAA also. They have been good to me. I would just watch the installer like a hawk. Good luck.

I also had a SafeLite windshield installed last year. Leaked like crazy. They replaced without issue, but it was a hassle. New windshield will get a rock chip if you just look at it funny. I'd go with OEM if i had to do it again.

I'm a USAA member also and I've used SafeLite for a driver's side window. The window would always squeak when I rolled it up after they replaced it. Nothing major just a little bit when it got to the weather strip at the top of the window frame. The tech that did the install was really rude and I personally wouldn't use them again.

Last time I needed an entire windshield replaced I had a local shop do it. According to the guys at the local shop (may or may not be true) Safelite is big enough that they can spec their own glass and they get lower quality glass than the smaller shops, which have no choice but to get OEM.

I've used Safelite on a previous T4R and was happy with the results. Love that they come to my house.

I used their on line scheduling tool, it worked smoothly. Only thing I would add, like you I live remote, they didn't have a tech close by and needed to reschedule.

I owned a few second gen Tacomas at the same time and went thru maybe 5 windshields over about a two year period. I was able to get them replaced by a local, "mom & pop" place for <$150. The T4R is a little higher due electric heated glass.

I didn't go thru my insurance on any of them and will add all the techs working the vehicle have all been great.

Make sure they use a OE glass molding and not some cheap cut to fit type.

I did a search on search for OEM glass and OEE glass and Safelight. As expected responses are all over the board. In general mom and pops shops hate Safelight. I have been with USAA over 40 years and they have always steered my in the right direction. I can't imagine them using any company with a bad rep or inferior quality materials. We shall see.

Now I know why my USAA premiums are so high. Everyone is claiming their damn windshields.

Used Safelite for my 2002 Tacoma. The first one they put in had a little distortion by the driver side A-pillar. One hassle getting it replaced other than the time. Most people probably either wouldn't have noticed or bothered getting it redone. Good install job and never had a problem with it.

I was hesisitant at first going to non oem parts but adding $500 to oem pilkington was a bummer for me, so i went to safelite so far no leaks no problem its been 4 months now, there is no difference aside from the brand. Also they installed at my workplace outside during winter season. They also give lifetime warranty for any leaks or problems.

So i guess it all depends how they install it.
