You're right, I can't get close to the 25 mpg highway my 5-lug is supposed to get. 30 is easy.

    Who can't beat window sticker?

and that confirms the research I linked that said over 90% of the ratings they tested are total BS.

    that's a 20% inaccuracy

Read the OP , he's asking a question about whether or not the mileage gets better as the truck ages not stating he's super pissed off that his truck isn't a hybrid getting 50MPG

    bunch of drama

My sticker says this: City 20 Highway 27

After that it says this: ACTUAL MILEAGE will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits and vehicles condition. Results reported to EPA indicate that the majority of vehicles with these estimates will achieve between

    17 and 23 City

    22 and 32 Highway

That had since been revised to new EPA estimates of 18/25.

The EPA does not account for people typically driving 10-15 mph above the posted speed limit.

Drive the speed limit on the highway and you will beat EPA every time.

According to the manual, break-in occurs after the first 1500 km. I noticed my gas milage improve by about 1 liter/100 km after 2800 km or so.

BTW, make sure you are driving with the shifter in "D" and not "4". "4" locks out 5th gear. New owners not used to the Toyota shift gate sometimes inadvertently drive in "4" - I did this in my test drive, but the salesman corrected me.

I drive on 4 or even 3 in traffic unless I foresee consistent speeds >50 mph. But I lose 1-2 mpg this way.

    Same

80% of my rural driving is under 50mph and hilly , in my opinion these trucks try to go into 5th ( D ) and lock up the torque converter too early and try to hold D too long especially going up hills , the truck seems like it is lugging all the time

I started driving mostly in 4th and monitoring my mileage , it didn't change at all from driving around strictly in D and now I don't feel like I'm lugging and the throttle response is better

Yes, it was a question, not a statement.

Turns out tank number 2 is far better. I actually filled it to the top, added the K&N and a roll up soft tonneau cover and basically took my foot right out of it between fill ups.

Computer says 25.5 mpg which I think is incorrect, but mileage went from 410 kms to 521 on 64.6 litres. We will see what the third tank does, but driving habits mixed with a little more highway driving may have helped. Also, the 4th gear to Overdrive is a bit tricky if you aren't watching the shifter positioning. However, I was getting almost the same mileage as most of you guys even if it was in 4th!

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Best mileage I've ever gotten is 25, love my 4 banger! :D I typically average between 22-24 during the summer months. But, 16 is about average for V6 trucks, depending on your driving habits you could probably squeeze 18. It all depends on altitude, tires, road conditions and operator behavior. How many miles are on the truck? During the break-in-period with mine I got around 11 to 15 and thought that was pathetic, but after it loosened up things got better.

Unfortunately the 2.7L lacks power for the heavier 4WD configurations.

I did a calculation before. Access Cab 4x4 2.7L is tied with the Prius V minivan for the worst power-to-weight ratio in the entire Toyota lineup. The Scion iQ city car with its tiny 3-cyl engine has better performance.

I've got the 4x4 ac 2.7 no lack of power just not as much as a v6. Towing heavy loads can be shitty though.

If you go from a v6 to a i4 ya it seems gutless but if you drove it for awhile you get used to it.

Nope doesn't lack anything, it had enough power to do the job just not as well as a v6. I towed 3600 pounds to the dump an hour away and still got 21mpg on the trip.
