Any electronic people know the source module circuitry of whatever drives (supplies the voltage and current) to the mirror display? Why I am asking is I wish to install an aftermarket mirror and retain the BSM indicator using the in-mirror turn signal display instead of the very weak included BSM display.

The turn signal operated at ~12VDC and the BSM mirror indicator operated at ~9.0VDC. So Toyota treats the BSM indicator as a special circuit with its own output, including ground supplied by whatever module controls it.

Why I need to know this info: The factory mirror takes ~22mA while in operation. My new aftermarket mirror turn signal indicator may take appreciably more current (will be measuring this soon at 12VDC, but unable to measure at this time at 9VDC) while the control module may be unable to supply.

On this aftermarket mirror the turn signal is within the glass mirror just like the BSM indicator. The BSM indicator is very dim, while the turn signal indicator is nice and bright. Turn signal has ~7 LEDs, while I can’t see how the BSM indicator is configured, but it is so dim.

This is a quandary of will using the integral to the glass mirror turn signal indicator for the BSM indication overload the supplying module output capabilities.

Looking at the backside of the mirror the BSM part has some SMD ( surface mount devices) incorporated in some potting (sealant).

Let me try this again with different words. I’m looking to abandon the “on the glass mirror BSM indicator” because it is too dim to see in the daylight and use the “on the glass mirror turn signal indicator” for the BSM indicator. I am aware of all the wiring and connections within the mirror and door, what I do not know is if the controlling module can handle the extra current since there are six LEDs in the turn signal indicator. I will be measuring the current draw of all indicators, I would feel more confident if I knew just what the output circuitry was of the module powering the BSM indicator.

So you're going to confuse anyone behind you that you are turning by having the arrow flash in place of the dim BDSM indicator led...good luck with that.:redxfall:

This is a poorly designed aftermarket mirror and the company does not even admit to even having the BSM capability or the puddle lights these mirrors have. Strange that they do not claim two important features people look for. My stock mirrors’ BSM indicator is bright too which is why I am disappointed in these mirrors.

Nobody uses turn signals anymore, nor pays any attention to them here in California. Especially the big red ones in the back or the amber ones in front. I just highjacked my own thread. Seriously I would rather have people a bit confused and take caution than me missing them and running into them. I view what you have pointed out as an upside.

I hate to wake this up…. But I’m kind of after something similar for my tundra…. Bought aftermarket tow mirrors and once installed, my BSM system throws an error on the dash requesting I see the dealership for service. The BSM Indicators flash a few times when first starting the truck then they never come on after that. So…. It seems as if the BSM module lighting up the in mirror indicator is detecting either too low or too high of current draw for those lights and is faulting. I can add a resistor either In series to reduce the current draw, or in parrallel to increases the current draw. But I want to make sure I’m headed down the right path first. I understand we are talking tundra vs Tacoma… but I can’t imagine the technology is that different between the two.
