I have been looking for a bumper that keeps the BSM functionality and improved the departure angel a bit. Since I couldn't find one I liked, I designed one myself. This one raises the hitch ~3in and covers the BSM sensors with 3/4" think UHMW. What do you guys think? Anyone know a good fabricator near Sacramento I can work with that can help me make this happen?

    Cheers

Don't forget cutouts for the parking sensors, license plate lights and trailer wiring.

I know, just wanted to get the design out there to get some feed back. Scaling and position are a bit off, but you get the idea. Bumper v2 w-truck.jpg

Nice start, but that's a pretty long away from a fully designed bumper that's ready to go to a fabricator.

You need to figure out how it'll mount, cutouts (tow hitch, plate light, parking sensors), attachment method for BSM sensors, attachment for license plate, reinforcements, and that little detail of actual fitment/clearance.

I suggest you buy a quality, pre-designed bumper and sacrifice the BSM functionality.

I also suspect that with your design, you'll find that your hitch receiver will be in nearly the same spot as on the original bumper. Certainly not a 3" clearance gain (not even close).

I agree with what here4cake said. Also, you could buy an existing bumper, get it unfinished (no paint or plating), and then modify it to have your BSM cut outs. That way it cuts down on like 95% of the work you're redoing.

Ok the only company currently doing it is C4Fab. If you look at a side shot it hangs below the bedside of the truck. Honestly that’s the only reason I haven’t gotten that one. If you can make it work and it doesn’t hang down I’m in. Oh and it needs a swing arm or two... Not to throw shade at C4, if that’s the only way to do it because of where the bsm sits I get it. It just looks not right imo.

Looks like a good start. Can you move the hitch up and behind the license plate? That’s a pretty common thing to do.

You're on a good start! Plate bumpers are great projects to learn how to weld on. If you can generate a flat pattern and get that waterjet/lasercut/plasma cut at a shop and weld it up yourself you'll save a ton in labor and have a good weekend project. 3/4 uhmw is too think in my option. Stock bumper plastic is only about 1/4in and I think abs.i would try to match that best you can to not throw off calibration.

I say keep working toward it. I think there is currently a market - C4 is the only one I know of and it has the kind of goofy angled license plate mount. I'd like a plate bumper but since mine is daily driver in Dallas traffic, I don't want to give up the BSM

I was in the same boat as you, but I find the BSM super unreliable. I want to get the Rav4 mirrors to replace the BSM when I get an aftermarket bumper on.

I saw this online, I’ve been waiting for a BSM compatible bumper for a while and this looks like it has the cut outs?
Does anyone know anything about this bumper?

I emailed the company that makes these, no BSM at the moment but it’s being worked on. They said after SEMA they are looking to build one?
If it’s like the photo, maybe a bit slimmed down I’d buy one today.

That looks like it makes the departure angle worse since it sticks out further than stock..

I have no experience with this bumper. They do not claim it to be BSM compatible, at least not that I can find.

Everything I have seen previously indicates the BSM module will not with trough any metal. With that said, I would not risk the cost on a "might" work with BSM if I wanted to ensure they continued to operate correctly.

The Rav4 mirrors only have the indicator in them, the BSM sensors are in the rear bumper just like the tacoma. See the location of the BSMs from the Rav4 owner's manual

I agree it looks to be at least 2 or 3 inches deeper on the corners.

I think he is referring to the Rav4 mirrors with the convex (fish eye) corner to aid in seeing the blind spot.

I think the corner needs to be taller or the BSM sensor will hang out the bottom. That thing is huge.
