Hey guys! New Tacoma owner here and avid lurker of the forum…

Wondering if I could possibly get some help with my issue here as I’ve found nothing that helps.

Couple days ago I came back to my truck in a parking lot, noticed minor damage to the rear bumper (R side).

    IMG_9620.jpg IMG_9622.jpg

Seems to have been bent and pushed in a bit with the plastic and metal frame under the bumper step. Everything was fine otherwise at that point. BSM operated as it should. Took it to the car wash and after driving a couple clicks “Check Blind Spot Monitor System” comes up on the dash. I turn the BSM button off and on again. Same issue. Figured the parking lot hit-and-run knocked the sensor out of alignment.

(pic from another user just for reference)

Fast-forward to yesterday. Now with BSM turned off, the right side mirror is displaying a constant blind spot warning light that never turns off even if I cycle the BSM button off and on.

Now I’ve located the harness and connector points under the bumper where it goes to the license plate LEDs and BSM sensors. If I disconnect the battery, disconnect the connector to the BSM sensors, reconnect battery, start the truck, would the side mirror warning light go away?

I called my Toyota service centre and the tech told me the ECU would just keep firing off the warning light unless I do a full recalibration and possible entire bumper/sensor replacement…

I really don’t wanna do this as I was planning to replace it with a steel high clearance bumper anyway (so BSM delete).

    TLDR:
    Got hit on rear bumper.
Check BSM system warning on dash with BSM on.
BSM right side mirror light constant on after car wash (even with BSM button off, warning on dash goes away as normal).
Cycling off and on doesn’t work.
Want to get rid of annoying BSM side mirror light problem before BSM delete and steel rear bumper replace.

Thanks in advance! Love this forum and all the useful information on it from all the users.

Unfortunately the BSMS doesn't have a dedicated fuse. It shares fuses with other circuits and the sensors communicate via CAN-BUS also. SO you'd have to remove the bumper sensors and harness. Plug the connector at the bumper and have TechStream friend de-activate the system.

That’s annoying. If I were you I’d simply pop that bumper cap off and disconnect the sensor (cover the plugs with electrical tape) then see if that helps.

For reference I have a steel bumper and I reconnected everything but I have the BSM button off. Not the same situation but I don’t have a constant light on so I figure at the very least disconnecting the sensor will keep it from triggering the light on your mirror.

Also if I were you (I have hit and run coverage) I’d try to claim it out and use that money for the steel bumper. As far as I know if someone hit and runs you and you have coverage you don’t have to pay a deductible.

BE1 is the male connector coming from the vehicle to bumper.
This is what Toyota does for the no-gadgets at bumper version...they leave exposed.

Appreciate all the replies! I managed to get the side mirror light turned off by disconnecting the BE1 connector behind the bumper.

Not gonna touch that damn BSM button anymore and I’m glad I’m removing that entire system for a steel bumper.

I was also looking for something to plug it off so really appreciate the link! For now electrical tape will do.

Also great idea to claim out the damage to pay off the steel bumper.

    Thanks guys :drunk:
