Posting for a friend who is looking at a 2016 SR 2.7 4cyl. 4wd. Clean exterior and interior. Has tow pkg. 140,500 miles (dude apparently drove it a lot) Clean car-fax. He's asking me what to look for before buying. Seller wants $16k. My 2013 with 180k is all I can compare it to (and I said mine was still running strong) but that's 3 years younger and a 6 cyl. So I wanted to reach out to you folks to get some other opinions on this one he's looking at. Thanks in advance and happy holidays everyone.

Price depends a lot on your geographic location. Check your local boards.

    Quick thoughts:

First owner could have bought truck new in 2015

First owner put more than double the average miles on this truck

Did first owner get required maintenance performed? Besides oil changes and antifreeze fluid changes I would expect belts, spark plugs, etc... need to be replaced

Look for signs of truck possibly in a flood (i.e. rusted interior things that shouldn't be rusted, watermarks on fabric, etc...)

Find out why seller wants to sell truck. Better to ask face to face to see how seller responds in person (i.e. does he look uncomfortable answering question?)

At first blush, the asking price seems good, but these trucks retain value better than most vehicles. Do a comparable search on Tacoma's with this kind of high miles.

    Make sure seller has title.

Avoid a truck that was "rode hard and put away wet"

Doesn't seem too bad. Maybe not great depending on location though.

Thanks for the replies. Anything that should be checked mechanically for this year m(besides the typical mentioned above like belts, etc...)? I know my answer to that for my 2013 would be no, but I don't know if the 2016s had anything that has more frequent failures. Thanks again for the replies.

Seems like a fair price. The 4-cly drivetrain is fairly bulletproof.

OP - Kelly Blue Book indicates $13-15k with that much mileage from a private party sale. Typical mileage on a truck of that age is 43,000-44,000 miles. So the one under consideration has over 3 times the average number if miles.

It all depends on how well the previous owner took care of the truck.

Around where I live, belt replacement at 100,000 miles can be $800-1500.

Not sure I would buy that truck for more than $12,000. That's just my 2 cents...:anonymous:
