I was expecting this to be a lot worse tbh so I;m pleasantly surprised. Idk why I did this to myself haha, I guess if I label it "budget build" I need to either

    a. set a budget or
    b. actually report on what I have spent.

My mental budget is "can I realistiically sell it for more/equal to what I spent on it in total?" If the answer is yes, then I'm doing good. At this point, I think I'm still in the black. This obviously doesnt account for time or energy spent, or else I'd be deep in the red and only getting deeper. Learning something is worth a lot tho right??

    Budget - humbug...

As long as the project isn't putting you in debt you are good in my book.
Enjoying the project and learning something along the way has value.

It is easy to get so caught up worrying about budget you spend years just going to work and paying the electric bill. :anonymous:

if the impact didn't break it loose, i would instead recommend a breaker bar, possibly with a cheater pipe instead. i've got some air ratchets like that, though not near as nice as that one-- if the impact didn't get it, that ratchet never will!

though given that the impact didn't get it, you're likely just going to break something, hopefully, it's just the bolt!

I SHould have been more specific, I cant access the rear bolts with the impact I have due to it being too bulky, so this smaller air ratchet should be able to fit in there.

i'd still suggest a breaker bar over that air ratchet :)

Sighhhh.... you were right. That air ratchet didnt do shit. I resorted to "get a ratchet on there and wedge myself under the truck and use my entire body to pry it loose" method. DIdnt break either bolt, but probably detsroyed some back muscles in the process. But all 6 bolts are now free. I'll be getting this bed off as soon as I can find somebody to help me lift it.

Not all impact wrenches are made equal. I have found I really have to pay attention to what torque ratings are for each of them. I have been excited before about the price of a particular ratchet only to discover that it had such low torque ratings that it would have trouble taking off a finger tightened nut or bolt. Sometimes manufacturers can get tricky too and switch to foot inches instead of foot lbs.

Yeah I didnt think that through. This one was rated at I think 60 when I needed probably 3-4x that

Potentially much more than that. I bought a DeWalt cordless model that is rated at 700 ft lbs and 1400 ft lbs breakaway torque. But it is big and I have held off getting a smaller version that fits in my hand as I was uncertain how effective it would be with so much less torque.

a comealong works plenty fine if you've got a nice tree on your property!

alternatively, if you're doing it in a garage, i know plenty of people, myself included, that would do it with 4 ratchet straps to the garage rafters... somewhat violent letting it down, but it goes up smoothly!

OK made some progress, actually got the bed off (more on that later) and first order of business was to tackle the gas tank so I dont blow myself up :) As you can see the filler neck had seen some better days:

    upload_2023-10-2_8-32-49.png

As you can see it had actaully compleltey rusted out at the base where it connects to the tank, and also had a sizeable hole in the neck itself

    upload_2023-10-2_8-34-4.png

So tat made removal quite easy at least. I purchased a new neck for ~ $75, seemd to be good enough quality for this truck at least:

Getting the bolts out that connect it to the tank was actually easier than I thought it would be. 6/8 came out without too much fight despite being mostly rusted/rounded off. 1 broke off  and 1 I had to battle with but eventually got it out

    upload_2023-10-2_8-38-0.png

I would like to replace these with OEM ones, does anybody know the part #?? I couldnt seem to find anything on it online

For now, I replaced the old neck with the new neck and just tightened it down with the old bolts to have something "sealing" the tank. I'll get some sealnt and new bolts and do it correctly in the future, but this is a major improvement from just having essentially an open gas tank

Making good progress, nice to see you have a hired man to help

If it just a plain old bolt you can match it up at your local hardware store, you can upgrade to stainless bolts if desired.
