I was wrong, still looks bad. The lighting was very dark when I checked it. Now I'm considering buying a new tailgate. It looks hideous to me. How much would a body shop charge?

I use this for most of the clear coat scratches, work very well. It's aggressive so use sparingly.

Don’t buy a new tailgate. You’d need to get a new one painted anyway. Swing by a body/paint shop and get a bid to fix yours. Around here I bet it’d cost $400 - $600. And you probably wouldn’t need a rental car because you could just leave your tailgate for a couple of days. Sorry and good luck.
